　　The Oscar Awards stared in 1929．Their full title is“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards”．The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years．They decide who will receive the awards．The awards are often referred to as the“Oscar”．This is a nickname given to the awards by a lady called Margaret Herrick．She was once the director of the Academy and she once said that the little gold statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar!

　　The Oscar is always an exciting event．Each year, at least one unusual thing happens．When the Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for best foreign film, he danced on stage! When Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for best actress, she could not make her acceptance speech because she was crying so much with happiness!

　　In 1987, Roberto Benigni won the award for best director for a film about the last emperor of China．Since then, Chinese film and actors have started to make an impact at the award．Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was s huge success and it won the award for best foreign language film in 2001．It also won several technical awards for its amazing“flying”people．We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near future．

　　It's time for the Oscar again．Once more, the stars will dress up in their finest and go to Kodar Theater．There, they will find out who has won the awards for best actor, best actress and best director．Millions of people watch the awards every year to find out who the winners are．Some people watch it to see the stars crying and laughing as they receive their awards．

　　One of the most famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils, “I can't make men to you, but I can help you make men of yourselves．”

　　Some young men have no idea to be the top one in anything, and they are to be pitied．They never can achieve much unless they see their weak points and change their attitudes to study．They are nothing now, and will be nothing as long as they live, unless they accept the advice of their parents and teachers, and depend on their own honest efforts．

　　Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for about eight weeks as members of a special work group．Everyone works several hours each day．They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and enjoyment in work．Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farms near the village．Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and build houses．The adults teach them skills．

　　There are several free hours each day．Weekends are free, too．During the free hours some of the teenagers learn phototaking or painting．Others sit around and talk or sing．Each teenager chooses his own way to spend his free time．

　　One of the teenagers has this to say about his experience, “you stop thinking only about yourself, you learn to think about the group．”

　　One day, a poor boy was trying to pay for school by selling from door to door．He was hungry so he decided to ask for a meal at the next house．However, when a nice young woman opened the door, he changed to ask for a drink of water．She thought he looked so hungry so she brought a large glass of milk．He drank it a little slowly and then asked, “How much do I pay?”“You needn't do that,”she said．“Mother has taught me to be kind．”“Then thank you very much,”he said．

　　As the boy, Howard Kelly, left the house, he felt strong and believed that people could be kind before he was about to give up．

　　Years later, the young woman became seriously ill．She was sent to a big city, where experts can be called in to study her illness．When Dr．Howard Kelly, a very famous doctor now, heard the name of the town that she came from, a strange light filled his eyes．At once, he got up and went down through the hospital hall into her room．He recognized her at once and decided to do his best to save her life．

　　From that day on, he tried to help her．After a long struggle, they won!

　　Before she left the hospital, the bill was sent to her room．She was afraid to open it because she thought that it would take a long time to pay it off．Finally, she looked, and to her surprise, she found these words on the bill：

　　“Paid with a glass of milk．”
