Increasingly, over the past ten years, people--- especially young people –have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, especially processed food(加工过的食品), is not good for the health. As a result, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain chemical additives(添加剂) and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers(化肥), widely used in farming today.
Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple words, this means that the soil has been nourished(给…营养) by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount—but not the quality—of foods grown in commercial farming area.
Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed move freely in healthy pastures(牧场). Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry(家禽):there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.
There are other sides of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually unnecessary food. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself. But it does seem to be addictive: the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year! Yet all it does is provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals, and no fibre.

  1. 1.

When you think of the different types of advertising, several come to your mind. There are the traditional means to advertise: newspapers, magazines, radio, television commercials, billboards, and even taxicabs. Yet there are other types of advertising, such as aerial advertising, which is very different in many aspects.
Radio advertising is aimed at the local customers. The downside of using radio is that the customer needs to have the station tuned in. Placement of ads on the radio is another consideration since listening time is important to the ad being heard at the best time. The upside of using radio is that the audience does tend to remember jingles(收音机广告中的歌曲)that are easy to remember.
Magazine and newspaper advertising is directed to the subscribers(订阅人). The subscriptions limit the availability to non-subscribers. The concept of being able to read information online is slowly changing the subscriptions to this advertising market. Limitations of circulation of magazines and newspapers mean fewer people viewing the advertisements.
Television commercial advertising is channeled to the viewers. Limitations of viewers based on the available channel selections lower the exposure audience. With the availability of satellite to consumers, locating the client base for advertisement can easily be lost or overlooked.
Billboard advertising focuses on the area of the billboard. Limitations of outside regions viewing the information are high. Getting the attention of the passers-by to view the information is also a subject to be considered.
Aerial banner advertising focuses on vast population of various regions. Based upon the region, the exposure is limitless. Grabbing or gaining the public’s attention is based on simple human nature to look up at the airplane that is flying overhead. People typically look up when a plane flies overhead. To have a banner with an advertisement adds more curiosity and response.
People tend to remember aerial advertising at a high rate. They also tend to communicate to others about the advertisement by sharing the information by word of mouth. This word of mouth is absolutely free but is of important benefit to aerial advertising. Aerial advertising can be done throughout the entire year, but the warmer months are preferred. Aerial advertising has certain restrictions. Yet these restrictions are fewer than the other means of advertising.

Parsley(欧芹)is an ancient green and a respected addition to many foods. But other times, its job is just to make a mealtime plate look pretty. Poor parsley, valued for its looks, then is thrown away. Yet parsley is a good source of vitamins and other nutrients. The taste is a little strong for some people, but others chew on parsley to freshen their breath.
Curly parsley is the king that often ends up being used just for appearance. Flat-leaf parsley is easier to work with for cooking. This kind is often called Italian or French parsley. Do you know about a third kind of parsley? Hamburg parsley has flat leaves that can be used for the same purposes as other parsley. But Hamburg parsley has a large root which is used as a vegetable to add flavor to soups.
Parsley is used in foods such as tabouli, a traditional Lebanese salad, and is often served with lamb, fish and beef dishes. Parsley is a herb if you use just the greens. if the root is used, then parsley is considered a vegetable.
Some gardeners suggest that to get the best-tasting parsley, you should plant new seeds every year. You can get parsley to grow faster by pouring warm water over the seeds. Leave the seeds in the water overnight. Then you can grow them in containers indoors or plant them outside. Parsley grows best when temperatures are below twenty-one degrees Celsius. It likes to grow in sunny places. Tile seeds need rich soil. Plant the seeds about fifteen to twenty-five centimeters apart. Water them regularly during tile first month. After that, parsley does not need very much water. You can harvest parsley by cutting most of the plant or leave more of the plant in the ground for a second crop.

The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet, including a variety of fruits and green vegetables. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say that when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to make special provisions to supply the missing vitamins.
An example of the dangers of a restricted diet may be seen in the disease known as "beri-beri", which used to make large numbers of Eastern people who lived mainly on rice suffer. In the early years of last century, a Dutch scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of beri-beri. At first he thought it was transmitted by a germ (病菌) . He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on polished rice which had had the outer coverings removed from the grain, it was thought this would be easier for weak and sick people to digest.
Eijkman thought his germ theory was proved when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on remains from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to separate the germ, which he thought was causing the disease, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who ordered that the rice without coverings, even though left over by the patients, was too good for chickens. It should be recooked for the patients, and the chickens should be fed on cheap, rough rice with the outer coverings still on the grain.
Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the new diet. He began to consider the possibility that eating unmilled rice (糙米) somehow prevented or cured beri-beri--even that a lack of some ingredient (成分) in the coverings may be the cause of the disease. Indeed this was the case. The element needed to prevent beri-beri was shortly afterwards separated from rice coverings and is now known as vitamin B. The milled rice, though more expensive, was in fact causing the disease the hospital was trying to cure. Nowadays, this terrible disease is much less common thanks to our knowledge of vitamins.

The soldiers had just moved to the desert, and as they had never been in such a place before, they had a lot to learn.
As there were no trees or buildings in the desert, it was, of course, very hard to hide their trucks from enemy planes. The soldiers were, therefore, given training in camouflage. They were shown how to paint their trucks in irregular patterns with pale green, yellow, and brown paints, and then to cover them with nets to which they had tied small pieces of cloth.
The driver of the biggest truck had a lot of trouble camouflaging it. He spent several hours painting it, preparing a net and searching for some heavy rocks with which to hold the net down. When it was all finished, he went for lunch.
When he came back from his meal, he was surprised and worried to see that his camouflage was completely spoilt by the truck’s shadow, which was growing longer and longer as the afternoon advanced. He stood looking at it, not knowing what to do.
Soon an officer arrived, and he, too, saw the shadow, of course.
“Well,” he shouted to the poor driver, “What are you going to do about it? If an enemy plane comes over, the pilot will at once know that there is a truck there.”
“I know, sir,” answered the soldier.
“Well, don’t just stand there doing nothing!” said the officer.
“What shall I do, sir?” asked the poor driver.
“Get your spade and throw some sand over the shadow, of course!” answered the officer.

School violence is in the headlines again after recent shootings at schools in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Colorado. After hearing the news, it’s natural for students — no matter how old they are or where they go to school — to worry about whether this type of incident may someday happen to them.
So how safe are schools? It’s actually safer to be in a school than in a car. Twice as many 15-to-19-year-olds die in car accidents than in shootings (and that’s all shootings, not just the ones that happen in schools). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 1% of all homicides (杀人罪) among school-age children happen on school grounds or on the way to and from school. So the vast majority of students will never experience violence at school.
However, some schools have re-evaluated their safety needs in response to the concerns of families and communities. Some now require that guests check in at the office or have more guards on duty. Some schools have fixed metal detectors. Another thing that helps make schools safer is greater awareness of problems like bullying and discrimination. Many schools have practiced programs to fight these problems and to help teachers and administrators know more about protecting students from this type of violence.
The cause of school violence isn’t easy to understand. There is no single reason why students become violent. Some are just copying behavior they’ve seen at home, in the streets, or in video games, movies, or television. There’s one thing experts do agree on, though: Having access to guns or other weapons makes it easier for some people to lash out against the things or people they don’t like.

  1. 1.

Which of the following statements can prove that schools are safe?

    1. A.
About 99% of 15- to-19-year-olds are safe at school.
    2. B.
Fewer students have died in car accidents than in shootings.
    3. C.
Students shot to death at school are half of all students.
    4. D.
Fatal shootings of students are less than 1% of all homicides.
  2. 2.

After schools have re-evaluated their safety needs, ________.

    1. A.
families will be more concerned about schools
    2. B.
communities will be responsible for schools
    3. C.
teachers will pay more attention to shootings
    4. D.
administrators will arrange to have more guards on duty
  3. 3.

From the last paragraph we can conclude that ______.

experts have found no reason for school violence
    2. B.
students with weapons are easily upset about things
    3. C.
school violence could be copied from violence in society
    4. D.

What did you dream about last night? Did your teeth fall out or did you fly? Maybe you died or someone you know did.Or maybe you were back in high school. These are among the most common dreams people have and they all mean something. Here are some of the most common dreams and their interpretations or symbolism.
Dreams of flying.Dreams of flying represent feelings of freedom that may result from an instance when you overcome a limitation or obstacle.Usually, children have more flying dreams than adults, because children are more open to their possibilities, and adults have often accepted limitations imposed by society.
Teeth falling out.Food in a dream is symbolic of knowledge because food nourishes the physical body and knowledge nourishes the soul.Teeth are a means to break down food or knowledge. When your teeth fall out in a dream, it could signify that you feel ill - equipped to break down the knowledge that you have available, that the way you break things down has changed. That change can be either positive or negative.
High school dreams.High school is a place of learning from the past, and dreaming of being unprepared for a high school test can indicate a struggle to access information you need to handle in your life.
Recurring dreams and nightmares.Recurring dreams are your subconscious (潜意识)mind's way of trying to get your attention.A recurring dream is a step down from a nightmare that is a louder, more insistent way your subconscious mind communicates. If you have a recurring dream, try to stop in the dream and identify what the dream is trying to tell you. That could mean asking someone who is chasing you what he or she wants.A woman dreamed for years that an old, haggard woman was chasing her around her home. When she finally stopped in the dream and asked the old woman what she represented, the old woman suddenly turned into a beautiful young woman and replied, "I represent your question of ' what if?’ "
