The purpose of a letter of application(求职信) is to help you to “sell” yourself. It should state1 the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have 2. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without 3 out any necessary facts.
In writing a letter of application, keep in 4 that the things a possible employer is most 5 to want to know about are your qualifications(条件), your achievements and your aims. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part. 6 the first few sentences fail to 7 the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be 8 at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not 9 your own need or desires. For example, instead of beginning with “I saw your 10 in today’s newspaper,” you might say “I have made a careful 11 of your advertising during the past six months” or “I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives 12 your product and why they like it. ”
Try to 13 generalities. Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now 14. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask “What can I 15 in a letter? Employers want experience—which, naturally, no 16 has.” The answer is that everything you have ever done is 17.
It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter. 18 a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. An excellent 19 is to enclose(内附) a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it 20 for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

That holiday morning I didn’t have to attend school. Usually, on holidays, Mother1me to sleep in. And I would certainly take full advantage of it. On this particular morning,2,I felt like getting up early.
I stood by my window overlooking the3, having nothing better to do. But as it turned out, I was soon to learn about something4 in life.
As I watched several people go by, get into their cars and go off, I5 an old man on a bicycle with a bucket on its6 and a basket rags and bottles on its back-carriage. He7 from one car to another, washing and cleaning them. From the water on the ground, it seemed that he had already8 washing and cleaning about a dozen or more cars. He must have begun to work quite early in the morning.
Several thoughts9my mind as I watched him work. He wasn’t well-dressed. He had on a pair of shorts and a(n)10 T-shirt. The bicycle he rode was not by any means the kind modern11would want to be seen riding on. But he seemed12 with life. There he was, working hard at his small business,13 at passers-by and stopping to chat now and then14 elderly men and women on their way to the market nearby.
There was a noticeable touch of15 in the way he seemed to be doing things—16the windscreen (挡风玻璃), then standing back to admire it; scrubbing (擦净) the wheels and17, standing back to see what they look like after the scrub.
It was a18 to learn, I felt. At no age need one have to beg for a19if one has good health and is willing to work hard. For a while I felt20 of myself. Young as I am—just sixteen, and there was this old man who must have been usefully engaged perhaps before the sun appeared above the horizon.

Jeremy’s heart was beating9. “No, don’t let them come, please!” But they came, closer, closer... “Now, take them!” cried his father. Jeremy felt his body10. “What happened?13didn’t you shoot?” his father said in a controlled voice. The boy didn’t answer. His lips were trembling.
“Because they were so14,” he said and burst into tears. He sat down, face buried in his hands and wept. All15of pleasing his father was gone. He had his chance and he failed .

Jeremy saw that there was no disappointment in his father’s eyes,18pride and love. “I’11 always love shooting. But that doesn’t mean you19. Sometimes it takes as much20not to do a thing as to do it.” He paused. “I think you could teach me how to operate that camera .”

Rubber ducks are being used to help scientists understand global warming and melting glaciers. NASA researchers have190 ducks into holes in Greenland's fastest moving glacier, the Jakobshavn Glacier between Greenland and Canada. The2have each been marked with the words "science experiment" along with an e-mail address. If they are found scientists will be able to3how the water moves through the ice and provide information about the4of glaciers. Scientists are still5about why glaciers speed up in summer and head towards the sea. One theory is that as the summer sun melts ice on top of the glacier's surface, the water moves to the bottom of the glacier, where it helps to6the movement of ice toward the coast. The Jakobshavn Glacier is believed to be the7of the iceberg that sank the Titanic in 1912. Robert Jones, the experiment organizer, said none of the ducks had been8yet. "We haven't heard back but it may take some time until somebody actually finds it and decides to send us a/an9that they have found it," he said. "These are places that are10so there aren't people walking around."

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg 1a few coins, do you hurry on, not 2what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly3some money? What should our attitude4beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It5be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems 6not to give some money to beggars.
7, most of the world's great religions order us to be open-hearted and 8what we have with those less lucky than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days, 9one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their10.
First, some believe that many city beggars dress up11to look pitiable and actually make a good12from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil.
13, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs.
Thirdly, there is the opinion14there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one's sense of15and self-dependence.
There is an opinion that the problem should be handled by the government16ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and17help.

My Forever Valentine我永远的“情人”
Valentine’s Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly (天真的) thought1him as my “Valentine man”.
My first recollection of the2he could bring to Valentine’s Day came when I was six. That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. The card was3“Love, Dad” and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to4my birthstone, a ruby (红宝石). There is5difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember6that ring with pride that all the cards in the world7not surpass (超越).
8I grew older, the gifts gave9to heart-shaped boxes filled with my10chocolate and always included a11card signed “Love, Dad”. In those years my thank-you became12of a perfunctory (敷衍) response. The cards seemed less13, and I took for granted that the Valentine would14be there. I had15my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others” and “Love Dad” just didn’t seem quite16.
His final card remains on my desk today. It’s a17of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a18of love with simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.
Those things never19, nor does the memory of a man who never20being my Valentine.
