I wanted everyone to tell Dad what we loved about him . The room became 6. Then one after another , people told stories from their hearts , while Dad 7with tears in eyes . People 8kinds of stories — stories about when they were little , stories about when Dad was young , and stories that shared family treasures .
The stories 9. Everyone seemed to have more than one story . Even the little grandchildren couldn’t10to tell Dad why they loved him . For a man who had been kind to so many people in his life , here was our 11to celebrate him . A few months later , at Dad’s memorial service , we more fully realized what we had 12Dad that night . Those are the stories people 13tell at a funeral (葬礼)after a loved one is no longer 14to hear the words . They tell stories , full of 15. But we had given those memories to Dad in his 16, and we had told them through laughter , accompanied by hugs and joys . He had them to 17and roll over in his mind during his last days and months .
Words do18, and they are enough . We just need to say them or to speak them 19to the ones we love . That’s the way to 20love and our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life .

So every time she would say something 7I disagreed with her I would just say. “Okay, 8you want, Mom.” But I really got cold quickly. And my9began to build. One night I talked to my mom about the school homework and she said, “Oh, that’s 10 ” and then went back to mop the floor.
“Don’t you ever 11?” I thought. But I didn’t say anything and stormed off. She had no idea I was 12upset. She would have been willing to talk to me had I 13her bow important it was to me.

I was going hunting along the motorway the other day when there was a sudden bang and I almost fell off my motorbike. It had a hole in the front tyre and it’s not easy to1 a bike without any air in the tyre.
I 2 stop without falling off luckily, but I still had the problem of what to do with the hole. A motorbike isn’t like a car; you can’t just change a wheel and go on your way. In the 8 the bike was all together again but then I realized I hadn’t got a pump, so how was I going to blow up the tyre? Fortunately, a9 motorist saw me and pulled up. He lent me his pump and I was soon ready to start off again. Next time I am in the motorbike shop I really must remember to buy myself a small pump though I don’t know 10 I am going to carry it on the motorbike.

When I was growing up, I always gave my mom an apron (围裙)on her birthday.I wanted my own mom —1that apron I'd just given her, of course —to2me at the end of each afternoon bearing a plate of home-baked3as she waited breathlessly to hear about my4day at school.
Mom loved her family without question, but as an elementary-school teacher she had her own exciting days to5 .She had hardly any extra time and6, and home-baked treats were rare in our house except7very special occasions.Since Mom didn't make cookies very often, the8of her baking were not always the same.Sometimes the cookies were browned a little more than planned or9together and other times the cookies weren't smooth.10, none of that bothered anyone in the family. All we11was swallowing whatever we were having for dinner that night so we could get to the cookies12us on the kitchen counter.
Now that I'm a mom myself, I can13all too well why my mother didn't always have the time to wear the apron. As was true with my mother, the list of things I need to do is often14than the day itself. But I also understand the desire to15the same yellow mixing bowl my mother used and make something special for my family every so often.Whatever I bake is met with approval, appreciation and good16by my husband and children. At some level, I believe they're17that I was thinking about them as I18the brown sugar into the butter or frosted the cake with their favorite kind of icing. They always know I love them.I19they know it a little better when I'm in a baking mood.
I'm sure my mother felt20the same way whenever she made cookies for us.Those cookies will always, in my mind, be the best treat.

This is a real life story of the engineers building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA back in 1870. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years. In 1869, a creative engineer named John Roebling was1by an idea to build a spectacular bridge2New York with the Long Island.3, bridge-building experts throughout the world thought that this was impossible and told Roebling to forget the idea.
Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he4to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge5could be built. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway, a tragic accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which6him not being able to talk or walk.
7his handicap, Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning8to complete the bridge and his mind was still as9as ever. He didn’t want to 10. Suddenly an idea11him. All he could do was move one12and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he13developed a code of communication with his wife.
For 13 years Washington tapped out his14with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands for his determination not to be 15by circumstances. It stands too as a monument to the love and16of his wife who for 13 years long17decoded(解码)the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.
Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves a(n)18goal. Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles(障碍) seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that19that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence(坚持), no matter what the20are.

A few years ago, when I was about1,I went out for a walk2a rainy summer day. I saw a man3 small, dirty colthes. He had4umbrella, and he was picking bottles out of bushes. When he found5 ,he smiled and put it in his big bag. I thought,“I wish there6 some way to help him. Well, I could give him my umbrella.” Then I walked to him7 gave the umbrella to him.“You need this more than I8 .” The man took it with9 big smile on his face and said,“Thank you! Thank you!” And then I walked away10 good, I turned around and saw him11a lot more, even though he was still picking bottles from bushes. “It was just an umbrella.” I thought, not12 that it was the kindness13 made him happy.
A few weeks later I was walking on a sunny day, and14 the same man with the same clothes,15 the same big bag16 of bottles. The only17 was that my umbrella was right in the corner, looking18 he cherished(爱护) it. It was so clean.
It didn’t19 that I couldn’t give the man a house and a job and I only did I was able to do. But200made someone else happier, so that was enough.
