Suddenly Herb's eyes were opened wide. What was that noise in the next room?Herb heard the window slowly being inched open. For a minute Herb was so frightened that he could not move, and his body felt like ice.

He knew that he mustn't lose his head and began to think of the things he could do.He couldn't reach the telephone without passing the window where he had heard the noise, and he couldn't reach the door.Again he heard the sound of someone trying to climb into his home.

Herb's drums were standing in the corner near the TV.“Wait, maybe there is something I can do.” thought Herb.

He picked up the drumsticks and beat on his drums as hard as he could. The commotion was so terrible that Herb surprised even himself. He also surprised the person in the window, who ran away as fast as possible. The burglary was nipped in the bud

“That's no more than you'd pay for a new hat. Linda answers.

She has asked the man at the hotel(旅馆)desk to get her the number. The telephone rings. Linda picks it up.

“Hello, Mom. Is that you?She says.

“Six pence per second , David reminds(提醒)her.

“Hello, honey. It is Mrs. Lee, Linda's mother, speaking in London. I can hear you very clearly just like you are in the next room. It's a better line than when you called me from your office. Do you remember? I shouted at that time, and still you couldn't hear me sometimes.”

“Yes, Mom. Linda puts in. I just wanted to ring to...
