 One thing missing

Old Mrs Fang lived alone in a small cottage in the country. She preferred a very simple life with little contact with the outside world. The nearest town was many miles away.

One day a car stopped outside her cottage and a young man got out. He took a large cardboard box out of the back of the car and carried it to her front door. Then he put the box down on the path and rang the bell.

As soon as Mrs Fang opened the door, the young man started talking.

“Good morning, madam. What a lovely cottage you have. You must spend a lot of time keeping it clean.”

“Well, yes, I do. But …”

The man continued his sales talk without paying any attention to what she said. “You may say that you have plenty of time, but there is more to life than sweeping the floor.”

The young man opened the cardboard box and took out a vacuum cleaner.

“With this machine, you can clean your house in a fraction of time.” he said.

“Well, yes, but …” Mrs Fang began, but the young man interrupted her again.

“I will demonstrate (演示),” he said, and before she could stop him he walked into the house.

He put the cardboard box on the floor and took out a huge bag. He opened the bag and poured a horrible mixture of dirt all over the floor.

“Please, you mustn’t …” Mrs Fang protested, but the young man didn’t listen.

“Don’t worry,” he said, as he stamped the dirt into the carpet with his foot and then spread it all over the carpet. “This machine can clean it away in seconds. This is the finest vacuum cleaner in the world.”

He smiled at Mrs Fang, “if you’ll just show me where the outlet is,” he said. “I’ll plug it in and begin the demonstration.”

“But I’ve been trying to tell you,” the old lady said. “There isn’t any electricity in this cottage!”

Now you’ve finished three years of English study. There’s one way to demonstrate(展示)what you’ve learned-take a test!

Do you have any special methods(方法) you use to help you do better on a test? How well you do is often a matter of how well prepared you are. Here are some ways to make sure you’re at your best on test days.

Go to bed early. The night before a test is not the time to stay up watching TV. You want to be rested and wide-awake for test day.

Have a good breakfast. Test day isn’t a morning for donuts(面包圈).Nor is it a time to starve yourself. Eat plenty of low-sugar, high-energy food to keep your brain and body working their best.

Be prepared, Make sure you have two pencils and anything else you were asked to bring.

Watch the numbers. Make sure that the number of the items(项目)on your answer sheet matches the number of the question.

Look over all the answer choices(选择). Don’t assume(假定)that choice A is correct until you’ve checked the others. You may find a better one. And it is wrong to eliminate(排除)any choice that you can see at once. You’ll have a better chance of finding the right answer.

Check the clock. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to answer every question and go back and check your answers .Don’t spend too much time on any difficult question .Skip(跳读)it and come back to it later.

Keep up with your school work all year long That’s how you get the skills you need for taking tests.
