Is the world warming up? According to many reports the answer is yes.Eleven of the hottest years since 1850 appeared between 1995 and 2006.Last year, the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)reported the earth was about 0.75℃warmer than it was in 1850.While this doesn’t sound like a lot, a small difference in average(平均)temperature can make a big difference in climate(气候).During the last ice age, the planet was only about five degrees colder than now.

It’s all about the speed at which temperatures are changing. In the past, temperatures moved up or down step by step. But in the 20th century, especially since 1976, temperatures have likely risen more quickly than during any century in the last 1,000 years.Warming may bring improved harvests(收获)to northern countries such as Canada and Russia. However, many species(物种)won’t like these conditions. They begin moving towards cooler places and cause lots of trouble to human world.

The IPCC reported that human activity is very likely responsible(负责任的), by increasing the greenhouse effect(效应).Some gases cause the air to take in heat energy.Without the greenhouse effect, the earth’s average temperature would be -18℃ rather than the present comfortable 14.6 degrees. The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide(CO2), water vapor(蒸汽)and some other gases.Burning oil, coal and waste adds to the Carbon dioxide, and it has increased 35%since 1850.

Many researchers have found that natural forces alone don’t explain the temperature increases over the last 30 to 40 years.Their study shows that as carbon dioxide goes up, temperatures will rise too.But some scientists don’t agree. They think the effect of human produced greenhouse gases is very small compared to the normal changes that the climate causes.

When asked whether humans are causing the world warming, Carl Wunsch, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says,“It seems very likely from what I’ve seen.Is it 100%sure?No.There’s something to do with natural changes.”Does that mean we should have a“wait and see”attitude(态度)?Not according to Wunsch. He points out we buy house insurance(保险)not because we are sure our homes will be on fire, but because it’s a danger we’d rather avoid.

Living in the Yukon

The Yukon is different from most places. It is a part of Canada. The Yukon is bigger than California. Not many people live in the Yukon. There are some good reasons for that.

The winters in the Yukon are very cold. Sometimes the temperature goes down to 40°F below zero. Cars won' t start in such cold air. People have to keep a fire going near the car.

Homes in the Yukon are usually log cabins (茅屋) . There are no electric lights or telephones in most of the Yukon. Water may have to be carried from a creek(小溪) . A home can be hundreds of miles from the nearest town.

Living in the Yukon is certainly not easy. Some people from the U. S. move there anyway. A man and his wife lived in a big town in New Jersey and moved to the Yukon. They like the open space there. They are getting used to new adventures(冒险).

One day the woman noticed some sugar spilled in her kitchen. She thought she heard her husband outside, and she went to ask him about the sugar. She came face to face with a black bear. The bear was growling and coming closer. She shut the door fast. “That doesn't happen much in New Jersey”, she said.

Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 55 when I was in high school.
The test was the final for a course. I remember waiting anxiously as my teacher Mr. Right passed out our papers one by one. It was a rather difficult test. I heard my classmates groaning, and I could tel by the groans that the scores weren’t looking good.
Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There in big red numbers, circled to draw attention, was my score, 55!
I lowered my head, and covered the score up quickly. A 55 is not something that you wanted your classmates to see.“The scores were not very good, none of you passed,”Mr. Right said. “The highest score in the class was a 55.”
A 55. That’s me!
Suddenly my sad look didn’t look so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot better.
I walked home alone that day with the low but high score. My father knew that I had a big test that day and asked me as soon as I got home, “How did you do in your test?”“I made a 55,”I said.
A frown(皱眉)now stood on my father’s face. I knew I had to explain immediately. “But Dad, I had the highest score in the calss,”I proudly stated. I thought that explanation would make a difference.“You failed!”my father replied.“But it’s the highest!” I insisted.“I don’t care what scores others had, but you failed. What matters is what you do!”my father firmly said.
For years, my father was always that way. It didn’t matter what others did, it only mattered what I did and that I did it excelently.
We often don’t understand the wisdom(智慧)of good parents until we ourselves stand in the parents’shoes. My father’s words have carried me throughout life.
