  The Chinese New Year is called the Spring Festival. It's the biggest festival in China. It usually comes in January or February. Where. there are Chinese, there is the Spring Festival. Each Chinese year has a name. We may call it the Year of Tiger, the. Year of Monkey or the Year of Horse (马). And the year of 2000 is called the Year of Dragon. The year after it is the Snake Year.

  People always spend a month before the festival in getting ready for it. People are busy cleaning their houses and buying many delicious things to eat like pork (猪肉), fish, fruit, drinks and many other things. They often make a special kind of food called "dumplings". On the Eve, there is a big family dinner. All the family stay up late to welcome the New Year, watching the CCTV programs (节目). It often lasts to the Lantern Festival (元宵节). People always have a very good time, especially (尤其) children. Every year there is a Spring Festival in China. Usually it is in January or February. It is the most important festival in China. So before it comes, everyone has to prepare things. They buy pork, beef, chicken, fruits and many other things. And they often make a special kind of food—“dumplings”. It means “come together”. On the day before the festival, parents buy new clothes for their children. Children also buy presents for their parents. On the Spring Festival Eve(除夕), all the family members come back to their hometown. This is a happy moment. Some sing and dance, some play cards and others get the dinner ready. When they enjoy the meal, they give each other the best wishes for the coming year. They all have a good time.

On the eve of the festival, people close the shops and stay at home. They all get together for a big dinner. They stay up late and enjoy dumplings at midnight for good luck.

In the morning, people dress in their best clothes, and usually the old stay at home, the young go out to pay a New Year Call(拜年). It is an important time for the young. The young people bow(鞠躬)to the old people. The Chinese call this “Ke Tou”. This means “touching the ground with the forehead(额头)”. Then the young people give their best wishes to the old people. The old people give children gifts or lucky money.
