Improve Homework Habits

Do you want to make homework simpler? It can be done readily with a little guidance from specialists (专家) in this field. Oxford Learning founder and CEO Dr. Nick Whitehead, said that homework doesn’t always have to be a headache. “Homework might be an unavoidable (不可避免的) part of school, but it doesn’t have to be the boring part. With the right skills in place, students can turn homework from headache-including to trouble-free.” These steps will make an obvious difference.

Use your notebooks

The brain is able to finish great works, but it is not perfect. Students should never rely on (依赖) it to remember all school details. When a teacher assigns homework, students should write the details in their notebooks. Many schools provide notebooks because they are the best organizational tools available.

According to Whitehead, to make them effective, students need to remember to take the notebooks out of their school bags at night, open them up, and read over the night’s list.

Remove distractions (使注意力分散的事物)

Computers on, music on, text messages receiving … this is not multitasking, it’s distracting.

Whitehead says that unless students are doing research, they should turn off all electronics and focus on the task at hand for a set period of time. They’ll find that it is easier to concentrate (全神贯注) and that homework takes less time. He adds that this fact has been confirmed by studies.

Think actively

Getting homework done is the name of the game, but what happens if students are struggling with a question, or can’t work out an answer? When facing difficulties, it is wise for the student to take a small break then return to look at the problem again.

According to Whitehead, students should look up their textbooks and school notes, take a step back to ask what the particular unit is all about, and even move ahead a few questions and see if the next part can help explain a little better. If not, use the Internet.

“Don’t stare at (盯着) the question; ask how this question relates to what is being learned overall.” he says.

Get organized

Homework is as much a part of daily routine as waking up in the morning and going to bed at night, but it’s often the most disorganized part. Whitehead recommends streamlining (使合理化) the process.

“Students should keep all the homework-related things in a bin or a bucket so they don’t waste time searching for pens or rulers.” He also recommends picking the same place to do homework every night, and (when possible) completing homework at the same time each day.

根据短文内容回答下列问题

It’s every teenager’s nightmare (恶魔): exam time. During the last three days of the term, we have six exams.

My easiest exam was maths. All of its questions were from earlier exams.
The biology exam was hard. At first, I thought I had failed it. It asked lots of things we never studied in class, so we could use our textbooks. But there wasn’t enough time to check every question. I guessed on many of them. But my teacher said I did well.

On the career planning and computer applications (申请) exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation (显示), a book report and a class evaluation. I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn’t think so much. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games.

I don’t think I did very well in the English exam. We had to write an essay (读后感) about books we’ve read in class. But I didn’t study enough.

At our school, we can “Test out” of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take a class exam. If they pass, they don’t have to take the class, I tested out of both computer and health classes.

Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes go for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it’s all over, and now it’s the summer holiday.

For my classmates, it will be two and a half months of fun without school or homework. But I’m a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parents do with their kids’ free time: still more homework.

In a class for adults, I gave the class homework. It was to “go to someone you love during this week and tell him or her you love him or her. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or haven’t shared those words with for a long time.

The people in my class were all over 35. They had learned that it was not nature (成熟的) to express their emotion. So this was very difficult for some of them.

At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I expected one of the men raised his hand. He looked quite moved.

As he stood up, he began saying, “Dennis, I was quite confused when you gave us this homework because I didn’t feel I had anyone to say those word to.”

“But on my way home, there was a voice which told me exactly who I needed to say ‘I love you’ to.”

“Five years ago, my father and I had a bad disagreement and have really never solved it since that time. We have avoided seeing each other unless we had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.”

“So last Tuesday when I got home, I visited my father and said, ‘I love you.’ He gave me a big hug.”
