题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Many years ago my grandfather Benjamin Brown, traveled on a ship. The first evening at dinner a Frenchman sat down next to my grandfather. Before he sat down, the Frenchman looked at my grandfather and said, “Bon appetit.” My grandfather stood up and said, “Ben Brown.”

The same thing happened the next evening and the one after that. An Englishman on the ship could speak French. My grandfather said to him, “I don’t understand the man who has dinner with me. Every evening he comes to dinner and introduces himself.” The Englishman asked my grandfather’s mistake. He explained to my grandfather that “Bon appetit,” was not the man’s name, but was French for “Enjoy your meal.”

Only a hundred years ago, people seldom traveled far out of their birthplace. Books were very expensive and there were few national(国家的)newspapers and no radio or TV. In fact, most people spent their time talking and listening. And only a little reading and writing went on and many people were unable to read and write. For this reason, native dialects(方言)grew up and people spoke as their parents and grandparents did. A Cornwall woman who traveled just as far as London would find that people spoke a complete different language.

Sometimes it is hard to take in just how much things have changed. You always have books around, read magazines and newspapers, have different TV or radio programs. You and everyone around you, often travel not just in British islands but all of the world. Modern science has changed our life and distances(距离)have been made shorter. It might have taken a Cornwall woman three days to travel to London. Now it takes less than two hours by air, less than four by train and less than six by road.

The result of this is that the language we use is becoming more national and the dialect are dying out. Writing, printing(印刷)and broadcasting(广播)have speeded up this change as one dialect has come to be used by more and more people. This is the dialect called Standard(标准的)English which was first used outside London in the south and east Midlands.

Alex knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability he made himself known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.

But Alex.a parrot, died two weeks ago when he was 31.Irene,a psychologist(心理学家)at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for nearly 30 years.

In 1977, Irene, then an excellent student in chemistry at Harvard, bought Alex from a pet store. At that time, scientists were not quite sure whether birds could learn to communicate with humans.

But using the methods of teaching, Irene helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers, as well as colors and shapes.

In experiments, Irene would give Alex a small reward (奖励), like a grape.Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it.The researchers then worked with the bird to help him with pronunciation.

Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue paper circle, he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it what it was made of.

Like other parrots, he also picked up some words when staying in the lab, like "calm down" and "good morning".He could also show his happiness and sadness.

Even before the week he died, Alex was working with Irene on difficult words. As she put him into his cage for the night that Thursday, Irene said that Alex looked at her and said," You be good.See you tomorrow.I love you."

He was found dead in his cage the next morning.
