　　Our sun is a star，and nine worlds move round it．Worlds like these are planets(行星)．

　　But there are other stars，other suns．Not only thousands of them，but millions of them．Do different stars have planets？We can see the planets round our own sun．But we haven't seen any more．The stars are too far away from us．Stars give out(发出)light，but the planets don't have any light of their own．So we can't see them．They're too far，and too dark．

　　Still，we can tell that some stars have planets．While a big planet goes round，it pulls its star to one side．And sometimes we can see this．Then we know that the star has a planet．

　　For example，Barnard's Star(巴纳德星)is a small red star．And it is the quickest star in the universe．But sometimes it moves slower，and then quicker again．We have known Barnard's Star for many years，and now we are sure it has a planet．

　　Peter King，15，Mary King，13，went to see a doctor．Peter had a bad cold，so the doctor gave him some pills to take．Marry had a cough，so the doctor gave her some cough medicine．

　　The weather was very cold．Snow was falling．The roads were covered with ice and a strong wind was blowing．It was not a goodnight to be outside．

　　Thomas，however，had to walk home from work．He had to walk along a country road．

　　As he walked the cold wind beat against his chest．

　　“I will be warmer，”he thought，“I wear my coat backwards．”

　　He stopped walking for a moment，took off his coat，and put it back on backwards．

　　“That's much better，”he thought，and walked on through the thickly falling snow．

　　A few minutes later a car hit him．The driver of the car had not seen him soon enough．When he tried to stop，the car skidded(滑行)on the ice．

　　The driver got out of his car and ran to help Thomas．

　　Soon a police car arrived．The policeman ran to look at Thomas who was lying on the ground．

　　“I'm afraid he's dead，”he told the driver．

　　The driver could not believe this．

　　“He can't be dead，”he cried，“I hardly touched him．Look at my car．There's not a mark on it．”

　　“He's dead，”the policeman said．“There is no doubt(疑问)．”

　　“I don't understand it，”the driver of the car said．“As soon as I hit him，I ran to help him．He was lying in the road，but he was breathing and there was no blood．”

　　“Did you touch him？”the policeman asked．

　　“Yes，”the driver of the car said，“but only to turn his head around the right way．”

　　Last week Fred had to go to New York．It was his first time there，and he didn't know his way around the city．He had a meeting at 10 o'clock，and he wanted to be on time．The meeting was in the Peterson Building on 34th Street，but Fred didn't know where that was．Seeing two men standing on a corner，he asked them．

　　“Excuse me，”he said，“but can you tell me how to get to the Peterson Building on 34th Street？”

　　“Sure，”answered one of them．“You can get there in five minutes．Go to the next corner and turn left．Walk three blocks(街区)and there you are．”

　　But the other man said，“There's a better way．Go on the bus here at the corner．It stops right near the Peters Building．”

　　“Not Peters，”Fred told him，“Peterson．”

　　Then the first man said，“On，that's on East 34th Street，not West 34th．It's quite a distance(距离)from here．You will have to take the subway(地铁)．”

　　But the second man told Fred，“No，don't go by subway．Take the cross town bus．It goes to the Peterkin Building．”

　　“Peterson．Not Peterkin，”Fred looked at his watch．It was almost ten o'clock．“Thanks a lot，”he said．“I think I'll take a taxi．”

　　When he got into the taxi，he saw the two men arguing(争论)and pointing in different directions(方向)．Next time he wanted to know how to get to a place，he'd better ask a policeman！
