One day when Hera, Athena and Aphrodite were playing in a garden, they found a very beautiful apple. On it were written the words: For the most Beautiful. Each of the goddesses thought that she must own it, so they started to quarrel. At last King Zeus asked them to let Paris, a young prince of Troy, decide who was the most beautiful!
The three goddesses went off to Troy. Each one tried her best. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, said she would give him wisdom; Hera, the wife on Zeus, said she would give him riches; and Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, said she would give him the most beautiful woman in the world. If Paris had been older, he might have wanted wisdom or riches. True to her word Aphrodite gave him Helen, who lived in Greece. But when he went to Greece to get her, he found that Helen was already another man's wife. Neither Paris nor Helen saw this as a problem. They left Greece for Troy, but a great number of soldiers followed after them. In this way, the Trojan War began. It lasted almost ten years.
