It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench in Washington, D.C.’Union Station, waiting for the train. Inside the waiting hall were many people.
A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.
“He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself.
Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple walked towards him.
“Excuse me,” the man bent down. “My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” he handed the boy a meal box.
The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped. In the direction to which he looked, I saw an old man in rags-in a worn sweater, worn trousers and open shoes, entering the hall.
Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood and helped the old to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it on the old man’s shoulders, saying, “A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” He placed the still-warm meal box in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer.
“Sure, son, but if only you share that sandwich with me. It’s too much for a man at my age. ”
We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and dad went up to those rags, “Excuse me…”
I rushed into a KFC and took out my pocket money. It was so cold that afternoon but I felt much warmer than I had ever thought possible.

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view (观察) of the art works.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted non-stop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided the wife was doing all the talk. I admired the husband’s patience for putting up with her continuous talk. Distracted by their noise, I moved on.
I met with them several times as I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant burst of words, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended it into a long stick and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man.” The clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery he made a promise that his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see? You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.

One windy spring day, I noticed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Colorful creations of different shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds flying and dancing. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them in control.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they rose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining (控制的) string and the cumbersome (笨重的) tail kept them in control, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” They rose beautifully even when they fought the restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose(松散的). “Free at last,” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”
Yet freedom(自由) simply put it in the control of an unkind wind. It fell down to the ground and landed in a mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last”, free to lie powerlessly in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to stop lifelessly against the first obstacle (障碍物).
How much like kites we sometimes are. The Heaven gives us adversity (逆境) and rules, rules to follow from which we can grow and get strength. Some of us break away from the rules so hard that we never reach the heights we might get to. We keep part of the rules and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.
Let us each rise to the great heights, knowing that some of the rules that we may be angry about are in fact the strong force that helps us achieve.
小题1:Why does the writer write the first paragraph?
A.Because it was the first time that he had seen young people flying kites.
B.Because he wants to share his feelings in nature with the readers.
C.Because he wants to tell the readers how to make beautiful kites.
D.Because he wants to use readers’ similar life experience to understand the article better.
小题2:By writing the second and third paragraphs, the writer seems to let the readers know__________.
A.anyone who wants no restraints is sure to be a sad end
B.what a pity it is that one kite flew down to the ground
C.man with freedom can’t be like that kite which fell down
D.the unkind wind is the cause of the fallen kite’s failure
小题3:What does the underlined word “restriction” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A.束缚B.放纵C.摇摆D.牵引
小题4:In the writer’s opinion, ____________.
A.without restrictions and rules we can make endless progress
B.kites are good examples to those who want to get freedom
C.restrictions are necessary for us human beings
D.we don’t need any freedom at all

Why you should think big
If you have something valuable in mind, a service to offer, or an idea to develop, then you present it to everyone to increase its scope(范围). Why not make full use of it?
The fact is, when you have a strong enough vision(远见), you may have the courage. And then you simply have to pursue it, however crazy it might seem to others.
Remember that everything starts small
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Everything starts small. Scientists say that everything in the universe came from a smaller unit than you can possibly imagine. So it doesn’t matter where you are at present, because from small beginnings come great things.
Think bigger by enlisting(争取) others
To think big, you need to see yourself as a small part of a greater whole. Enlist people who are better than you. If you’re not the most organized person, don’t just be unhappy about it; find someone who is better.
Big thinkers know their personal limitations(局限性). Gather people around you who can do what you can’t do to make sure your dream grows.
Think big by focusing on future regrets(遗憾)
There is an old saying, “We regret not the things we did do, but the things we didn’t.” You’ll never know how far it could go unless you see how far you can take something.
If you have big plans, just close your eyes. And strongly imagine how regretful you will be if you don’t try or attempt properly.
Feel that it is your human duty to think big
When something is probably a real service to mankind, then it is a human duty to think and act big. Even if you don’t succeed at last, it is still valuable to think big.

Sneakers are a kind of shoes worn by many people all over the world.       , no one really knows where the word “sneaker” came from. Some say it came from the old English verb “sneak”, which means to move silently and quickly. The only thing we are       is that when you put on a pair of sneakers, you feel light-hearted, light-footed and ready to play.

Sneakers of some kind are used by those who play tennis, basketball, and other sports. New design has been made        for people who run slowly. In fact American children of         ages would much rather play in sneakers than anything else.
New York City once held a poetry competition for children. The subject was only “sneaker”. One prize winner called     poem “The Sneaker and the World Peace”. “When everyone is wearing sneakers,” she said, “it will be impossible to        .”
American school children can be seen every day      sneakers of all colors. They put them on in the morning and take them off at bedtime. Sneakers are      washed. Some children think the older and dirtier they are, the         loveable they are. When their sneakers wear out, children hate to throw them off. How do you explain the closeness between      and sneakers? Perhaps another young winner in the New York Poetry Contest said it best. “A shoe is just a shoe,” he said. “But a sneaker is a friend.”

Once upon a time all feelings went to an island for a vacation, and each was having a good time. Suddenly, a warning of a strong storm was announced ,so all rushed to their boats. Yet, Love did not wish to run away quickly. There was so much to do. But as the clouds darkened, Love realized it was time to leave. But there were no boats to spare. Love looked around with hope.
Just then Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love shouted, "Richness, can you take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
