Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Gaudi, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck—a game show which my best friend Carla and I love. Carla has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history, so we thought we’d be good for the team.

A few days later, Mr. Gaudi held a meeting with everyone interested in the . He told us that Smart Aleck uses a five-member team. He also said that three more people would be needed as backup(替补). , four times that many students were at the meeting. So Mr. Gaudi said we would have a and the top eight scorers(得分者) would become the team and the backup. Everybody agreed that this was a way to decide.

Yesterday, all of the hopefuls went to the dining hall after school. We would have to decide the starting line-up(阵容). Mr. Gaudi acted as the host. After a few hours, all the on the team were chosen except one. Carla and I tied(打成平手) for that last position. We had to hold a one-on-one competition the two of us. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the backup.

Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull ahead(领先). I saw the look on Carla's face. I waited for a second and knew what I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Carla wanted even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Carla , just by a little bit. She felt sorry for my not being on the team as she she would be on the show. And since I will go as backup, I’ll still have the fun of the show up close.

Was I cheating(欺骗) by not trying as hard as I could? I don’t think so. No one noticed, and Carla and I didn’t it. It won’t hurt the team Carla will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the right thing to do.

Eighth-grader Victoria Bills is talking about money with her classmates. She is worried that a company’s stock (股票) price could fall. It may be an unusual topic of conversation for a 13-year-old. But at Bills’ school in Chicago, US, you hear it all the time.

The Chicago school’s 420 students learn about economic(经济学). They also get a chance to make money. Each 1st grade and 5th grade, students learn the basics of economics and investing(投资).

June 11,2013 was another big day for Chinese space exploration. Shenzhou X, China’s fifth manned spacecraft, was sent into space. Three astronauts, Nie Haisheng, 49, Zhang Xiaoguang, 47, and Wang Yaping, 33, stayed in space for 15 days.

Tiangong-1 is China’s first space module(舱). It was sent into space in 2011. It will be developed into a large space station around 2020. A space station is a lab for scientific studies.Shenzhou X performed its first docking（对接）with Tiangong-1 on June 13. It docked twice during the 15 days.

The US, Russia, Japan, Canada and Europe are working together on the International Space Station (ISS).China wanted to join the ISS but was refused by the US. China decided to build its own space station.

Shenzhou X flew around the Tianggong-1 lab for the first time. This was to make sure that spacecraft could dock from more than just one direction. The astronauts carried out repair work and did experiments on the Tiangong-1.

Wang Yaping, China’s second woman astronaut, taught high school and primary school students about space science. Wang talked about how things move in a micro-gravity(微重量)environment. It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. Some students like to translate(翻译) when they practice speaking English. Translation is a very difficult exercise. During a conversation, we don’t really have time to translate what we understand.
