Dear Bob,

I haven’t written to you for a long time. This time I’d like to share with you the wishes I want to realize in the holiday after the entrance examination.

To begin with, as a student, I have been working hard in senior high school for three years, and I do hope I will succeed in being admitted into my ideal university to further my education. Also, I can spare more time to help children in the orphanage, which is helpful for my character building. Finally, the holiday provides me with a great opportunity to realize my dream to travel. Maybe experiencing life on the Mongolia grassland with people there will be a good choice to broaden my vision. Do you have some wishes to share with me and some advice for me?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours,

Li Hua

Culture Shock

Culture shock refers to the anxiety and feelings (of surprise, uncertainty, confusion, etc.) felt when people have to operate within a different and unknown cultural or social environment, such as a foreign country.

Generally speaking, we could say that there are four stages of culture shock. The first stage is called “the honeymoon”. In this stage, you are excited about living in a different place. 【1】

The next stage is “the hostility(敌意)stage”. In this stage, you begin to notice not everything is as good as you originally thought it was. 【2】 Moreover, people don’t treat you like a guest anymore.

Then you come to the third stage called “recovery”. In this stage, you start to feel more positive. 【3】 The whole situation starts to become more favorable and you begin to learn to adapt yourself to it.

The last stage of culture shock is called “adjustment”. In this stage, you have reached a point where you actually feel good. 【4】 The things that originally made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you have adjusted to the new culture and you feel comfortable.

Not all individuals visiting another country will experience all these four stages.

【5】 It also occurs within cultures as individuals move from place to place or from one setting to another (e.g., from high school to college).

A. You feel that friends should help each other to deal with culture shock.

【题目】阅读理解

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.

In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.

【1】 Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?

A. Because it’s hot in summer.

B. Because you eat too much for lunch.

C. Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night.

D. Because your body temperature goes down at that time.

2What can we learn about “naps” according to the last paragraph?

A. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.

B. Doctors need to take naps while employers don’t.

C. Taking naps regularly is beneficial to people’s health.

D. If you take naps every day, you’ll never suffer from heart disease.

3When do you usually feel sleepy after getting up?

A. Five hours later.

B. Six hours later.

C. Seven hours later.

D. Eight hours later.

4What would be the best title for the text?

A. Just for a Rest

B. All need a Nap

C. A Special Sleep Pattern

D. Taking Naps in Warmer Climate
