Six weeks before the 1984 Olympic Garner, Mary Lou hurt her right knee. She went to Richmond, Virginia. She had an operation done on it. Doctors told her she wouldn't be able to go to the Games. However, Mary Lou started working hard. Her knee got stronger. She was able to compete in the Games.
