Computers can help you do your homework in all kinds of ways. They can even make it easy to write the following sentence one hundred times:“I will not be late again.”All you have to do is to write a simple problem, run it, and print out the results.

Of course, there are better ways to use a computer to help do your homework. The lesson can be in the form of a new learning experience, a drill, or a review. And you can do the lessons as many times as you want—a computer never gets bored.

All kinds of computer programs are being used as learning tools. For example, people are learning to type rapidly with typing programs. You can immediately tell how well you are doing and even have fun while practising.

The modern sailing ship was developed by a man who never went to sea. He was Prince Henry of Portugal, the younger son of the Portuguese King and an English Princess.

Prince Henry lived in the fifteenth century. As a boy he became devoted to the sea and he dedicated himself to improving the design of ships and the methods of sailing them. In 1416, when he was twenty-two, Henry founded a school for mariners, to which he invited everyone who could help him-Jewish astronomers, Halian and Spanish sailor, and Arab mathematicians and mapmakers who knew how to use the crude compass of the day and could improve it.

Henry's goal was to design and equip vessels that would be capable of making long ocean voyage without having to keep close to the shore. The caravel, which he helped design, carried more sails and was longer and slimmer than any ship was made, yet was tough enough to stand up against gales at sea. He also developed the carrack, which was a slower ship, but one that was capable of carrying more goods.

The world owes credit to Henry for the development of craft (工艺) that made oceanic exploration possible. He lives in history as Henry the navigator.

I'm seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter and you put things in their bags for them. And carried things to their cars. It was hard work.

While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said,“Mr. Castle, how are you?”We talked about this and that. As he left, he said,“It was nice talking to you, Brett.”I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didn't remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put“Irving”down on my name plate. If he'd have said,“Oh, yes, Irving, how could I forget you?”I'd have been ready for him. There's nothing personal here.

The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldn't accept tips (小费). Okay, I'm outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction (反应) is to take a quarter and give it to me. I'd say,“I'm sorry, I can't.”They'd get angry. When you give someone a tip, you're sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say.“Oh, thanks a lot.”When you say,“I'm sorry, I can't,”they feel a little put down. They say,“No one will know.”And they put it in your pocket. You say,“I really can't.”It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically(身体上) to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the store's belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldn't understand the strangeness of people's ideas. One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.

I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and feed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up.

1.What can be the best title for this text?

[ ]

A.How Hard Life is for Box Boys.

B.Getting along with Customers.

C.Why I Gave up My Job.

D.The Art of Taking Tips.

2.From the second paragraph we can infer that ________.

A.the writer didn't like the impersonal part of his job

B.with a name plate, people can easily start talking

C.Mr Castle mistook Irving for Brett

D.Irving was the writer's real name

3.The box boy refused to accept tips because ________.

[ ]

A.customers only gave small tips

B.he didn't want to fight with the customers

C.the store forbade the box boys to take tips

D.some customers had strange ideas about tipping

4.The underlined part“put down”(in Paragraph 3 ) probably means ________.

D.hurt

In America, drivers' education is part of the regular high school curriculum(学校全部课程). Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver's education. However, unlike other courses, it's not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.

The course is divided up into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to practice driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver's license.

Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel(方向盘) and practicing starting, steering, backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers(操作) required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a toatl of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two-hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour of driving time per outing. The instructor and“driver”sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.

Drivers Education cars are unlike other cars in that they have two sets of brakes, one on the driver's side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus, if the student driver should run into difficulties the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a sign that reads:

STUDENT DRIVER. That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution(小心) because the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experienced and prone to (易于) driving slowly.

After the student has passed the driver's education course and reached the appropriate age to drive (this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), they can go to a designated state office to take their driver's test, which is made up of an eye examination, a written test, and a road test. The person must pass all three tests in order to be given a driver's license, If the person did well in his or her driver' s education class, he or she will pass the test with flying colors and get a driver's license.

1.In America, the diver's course mentioned above ________.

[ ]

A.is considered as part of the advanced education

C.is given to anyone wanting to get a driver's license

[ ]

A.get half an hour driving every day

B.drive for two-hour blocks of time

C.go out driving for twelve times

D.spend at least six hours driving.

4.In the last sentence, the underlined part“with flying colors”means ________.

Rex White knows too many seamen's stories to want to add to them. Besides, this happened on land. It happened in Lytham, a town on the River Ribble, near the place where the river flows into the Irish Sea. The shape of the trees along the Lytham beach road is proof(证明)of the great strength of the wind which comes in off the sea. It blows hard across the grass, the car parks and the open road beside the river, and there's nothing to stop it.

Rex was a ship's pilot. It was his job to guide ships up the river, between banks of sand, into the port of Preston. Mr White lived in a village some kilometres from the coast, so he had to drive to Lytham and leave his car in one of the car parks beside the river. Then he rowed (划船) out to the pilot boat , and waited for the particular ship that it was his duty to guide.

Early one morning, Mr White returned to Lytham from a night on duty, to find that he could not start his car. He had driven from his village the evening before and had left his car in the car park as usual. He had rowed out to the pilot boat and gone on board the S. S. Kilkenny, which was on her way from Ireland. Then, in the early hours of the following morning, he had returned to Lytham in the pilot boat, expecting to drive home to have a cup of hot chocolate and a warm bed. But whatever he did, he could not get the engine to start.

It was a cold and windy night; there was no one about, and there was no garage open to which he could turn for help. He was just about to give up and spend the rest of the night on the back seat of the car when he had a bright idea. He pushed the car round so that it was facing in the direction of the wind, opened all four doors, pushed it along a short way, and then jumped in. The doors acted like sails(帆), and in no time the wind had taken him right out of the car park, and away down the beach road. When he tried the starter switch (开关) once more, the engine roared (咆哮) to life immediately. All he had to do then was to stop the car and shut the doors.

He went to bed later than usual, but he didn't go without his cup of hot chocolate. Mr White was not a seaman for nothing.

1.This passage is about ________.

C.what happened to Mr White one cold end windy night

D.how Mr White did his job and enjoyed his life

C.from the fact that the open road is beside the river

D.by taking this story as a real one

3.His“bright idea”was to ________.

[ ]

A.push the car round so that it was out of the wind

B.put up sails on the car and let it go with the wind

C.open the doors and get the wind to push the car along

D.push the car a short way and then jump in

B.Mr White had other things than a cup of chocolate for what he had done

C.Mr White was an experienced and clever seaman

I'm beginning to think that my grandmother is right when she complains(埋怨), as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-behaved (polite) as they used to be. She recounts in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak only when spoken to , and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say please and thank you. Children in her days, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you're lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind their manners.

If you give her the chance she then takes out of her old writing desk the old photograph album(相册) she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying (展示). Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as strict looking as that, you too would have been“seen and not heard”. Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her—Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were so burdensome (heavy) to a little girl that she hadn't enough breath left to be talkative, let alone being naughty. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent to school from an early age.

Nevertheless, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother. I played football with him and his friend. We all spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief(恶作剧). I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wearing tight, stiff clothes.

1.The writer thinks that ________.

[ ]

A.perhaps her grandmother's early life was sad

B.her grandmother complains too little

C.perhaps her grandmother complains too much

D.her grandmother may probably be right

2.Who were the grandmother's“elders and betters”?

[ ]

A.People of older age and more experience

B.Older people who were better than she was.

C.Very good people who were elderly.

D.Very old people who behaved well.

3.Children were expected ________.

[ ]

A.to keep their mouths shut at all times

B.to hear and not to see

C.to be present but keep silent

D.to be seen in silence

4.The beat title for the passage is ________.

I still remember—my hands and my fingernails still remember—what used to be prepared for us on our return to school from the holidays. The schoolyard would be covered with fallen leaves, lying around here and there in piles. In some places there were even more than just piles of them: it would be like a muddy sea of leaves.

“Get that all swept up!”the headmaster would tell us.“I want the whole place cleaned up, at once.”

At once! There was enough work there, very hard work too, to last for a week. Especially since the only tools with which we were provided were our hands, our fingers and our nails.

“Now see that it's done properly, and be quick about it,”the headmaster would say to the older pupils,“or you'll have to answer for it!”

So at an order from the older boys we would set to work. If the work was not going as quickly as the headmaster expected, the big boys, instead of giving us a helping hand, used to find it simpler to beat us with branches pulled from the trees.

In order to avoid these blows, we used to bribe (贿赂) our“kings”with the cakes or other good food which we used to bring for our midday meal. And if we happened to have any money on us, the money would change hands at once. If we did not do this, the blows were doubled. They would hit us so badly that even a dumb person would have realized we were being beaten not to make us work harder, but to make us obey. Thus we would be only too glad to give up our food and money.

Occasionally, one of us worn out by such cruel beating would have the courage to complain (抱怨) to the headmaster, who would, of course, be very angry, but the punishment the older boys received was always very small, nothing compared with what they had done to us. And that fact is that however much we complained, our situation did not improve in the slightest.

1.The writer says“My hands and my fingernails still remember!”because ________.

[ ]

A.his hands and fingers have the sense of memory

B.he could never forget his headmaster

C.he suffered a lot from the hard work

D.he would remember his school life forever

2.The old boys beat the young ones extremely hard because ________.

[ ]

A.they wanted the young ones to work quickly and properly

B.they were too lazy to work themselves

C.they knew this would make the young ones offer bribes

D.they knew the headmaster would do no harm to them

3.When the younger boys complained to the headmaster ________.

[ ]

A.it made no difference to them

B.it only made matters worse

C.he became very angry with them

D.he gave the older boys punishing blows

4.What can be the best title for the passage?

In 1789 the US government passed a law saying that the land of the American Indians could never be taken from them without their agreement. One hundred years later, however, the Indians only had a very small part of the land that originally belonged to them. How did this great injustice occur?

About 1812 white settlers began to move west across North America. At first the settlers and the Indians lived in peace. However, the number of settlers increased greatly every year, and slowly the Indians began to see the white settlers as a danger to their survival (生存). To feed themselves, the settlers killed more and more wild animals. The Indians, who depended on these animals for food, had to struggle against starvation (挨饿). The settlers also brought with them many diseases which were common in white society, but which were new for the Indians. Great numbers of Indians became sick and died. Between 1843 and 1854 the Indian population in one area of the country went down from 100,000 to 30,000.

More land was needed for the increasing number of white settlers. In Washington, the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared. The old promises to the Indians were broken; the federal government began to move groups of Indians from their original homelands to other poorer parts of the country. Some Indians reacted (反响) angrily and violently to this treatment. They began to attack white settlers, and the Indian War began. For thirty years, until the late 1880s, different groups of Indians fought against the injustices of the white men. They had a few famous successes, but the result of the struggle was never in doubt. There were too many white soldiers, and they were too powerful. Marry Indians were killed; the survivors were moved from their homelands to different areas of the country. It was a terrible chapter in the history of the country that promised freedom and equality to everyone.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.in the US there were marry laws that protected the rights of American Indians

B.the law which was passed in 1789 by the US government was not successfully carried out

C.in the 19th century no wrong was done to the Indians by the US government

D.the majority of white settlers were openly opposed to the law passed in 1789

2.Why did American Indians begin to see the white settlers as a danger to them?

[ ]

A.The settlers killed the animals the Indians needed for food.

B.The settles did obey the laws passed by the US government.

C.The settlers spread some diseases on purpose, which killed many Indians.

D.The settlers took land from the Indians to build their houses.

3.It is implied in the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.the Indians had many great successes in the Indian Wars

B.no doubt the Indians would be beaten in the Indian Wars

C.after the war the Indians stayed where they were before

D.it was quite obvious that the Indians were strong enough to fight

4.What can be learned about the US government?

[ ]

A.It always respected the rights of the Indians.

B.It cannot be criticized for its treatment of the Indians.

C.It treated the Indians unjustly.

D.Its unfair treatment against the Indians was not on purpose.
