“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛) going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me. He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder. ”

Here is a two-way student exchange programme: Fred, 19, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little about German when he arrived, but after 2 months’ study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took 14 subjects instead of the 6 that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual(个人). Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it. ”
At the same time, in America, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize American schools, ”he says. “It is far too easy by our level. Watch good teachers, and you will see that they do not sit motionless before their class: They stand the whole time they are teaching, they walk about, using their arms, hands and fingers to help them in their explanations, and their faces to express feelings. Listen to them, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of their voices always changing according to what they are talking about.
The fact that good teachers have some of the gifts of good actors does not mean that they will indeed be able to act well on the stage: There are very important differences between the teachers’ work and the actors’. Actors have to speak words which they have learnt by heart, they have to repeat exactly the same words each time they play a certain part, even their movement and the ways in which they use their voices are usually fixed before. What they have to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.
Good teachers work in quite a different way. Their audience take an active part in the play: They ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they do not understand something, they say so. Teachers therefore have to suit their act to the needs of their audience, which is their class. They cannot learn their part by heart, but must invent it as they go along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains would not keep discipline: They could not keep strict to what another had written.
1. The passage mainly tells us ________________.
A. what a good teacher is
B. how to be a good teacher
C. the difference between a teacher and an actor
D. the way to become a good teacher

A. He should be able to hold the audience’s attention.
B. He must have a clear but low and soft voice.
C. He should be able to act what he’s teaching.
D. He doesn’t sit in a chair with an expressionless face.
3. Teachers in class have to ________________.
A. create a group of audience
B. meet their students’ needs
C. be told what to do by their students
D. invent a certain part of a play
4. The passage seems to suggest that a good teacher may not be a good actor because ________________.
A. they are nervous on the stage
B. their brains are out of control
C. they miss their students
D. they are not used to saying what others have written
5. Which of the following has the same meaning as the underlined word “motionless”?

This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly loved children—all under the age of 5—and I’m upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example:
They lock the doors to their children’s bedrooms at night because “the children might get out of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them”.
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a “naughty” word, all three are given hot sauce(辣酱汁)in the mouth.
I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere(干涉).
Gram
Dear Gram,
Children’s bedroom doors should not be locked. If a fire breaks out, it would be a nightmare (可怕的事物).
Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make them grow up to hate each other.
Children who use “naughty” words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth. They should be taught the proper and acceptable words to use instead of the “naughty” words.
Abby
1. From the passage we can see that Abby is probably_______.
A. a famous writer B. a columnist (专栏作家)
C. a friend of hers D. a government official
2. Gram’s daughter_______.
A. is very strict with her children
B. does not love her three children
C. always punishes her children at night
D. often gives her children hot sauce
3. Gram writes the letter in order to_______.

B. criticize her daughter’s ways as a mother
C. express her anger about her daughter’s ways as a mom
D. get others’ opinion about her daughter’s ways as a mom

Most scientists believe that man-made chemicals are destroying the ozone. They also have found signs of ozone loss in other parts of the atmosphere.
Ozone is found both in the air we breathe and in the upper atmosphere. Near the earth, ozone in the air is a danger to life. It is a waste product. But ozone found 10 to 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere protects life on earth. Ozone is formed in the atmosphere through the action of solar radiation. Once formed, the ozone blocks harmful radiation from reaching the earth. Scientists say a reduction in ozone and an increase in the harmful radiation will cause many more cases of skin cancer and will harm crops, animals and fishes.
The report said it is about 8 degrees colder 15 kilometers above earth than it was in 1979. Scientists think the first loss of ozone reduces the amount of solar energy the atmosphere can take in. This cools the atmosphere, increases ice cloud production and leads to more ozone loss.
Scientists found signs the ozone problem has spread. The study shows that the loss of ozone over the areas with larger population in North America and Europe was at least three times greater than scientists had thought. The ozone levels reduced much more seriously during winter months than in warmer months. This is not surprising because the amount of ozone in the atmosphere changes with the temperature.
An international effort is being made to stop the loss of ozone in the atmosphere. But many experts fear that the effort will not produce results fast enough to prevent harm to life on the earth.
1. The text is mainly about_______.

D. The ozone up above us can stop harmful radiation from getting to the earth.
3. The loss of ozone may be caused by the following conditions except for_______.
A. the amount of solar energy B. the colder temperature
C. the larger population D. man-made chemicals
4. From the text we have learned that_______.
A. the scientists have done a great deal to stop getting warm on the earth
B. the temperature in 1979 was much colder than it is now
C. ozone holds solar energy and helps atmosphere take it in
D. successful efforts have been made to stop the loss of the ozone
5. This text mostly wants to_______.
A. draw people’s interest in atmosphere
B. call the public attention to ozone problem
C. help people to know the change in air

But why do people want to do nothing but read while traveling to work in a train?
