  Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer(扫盲志愿者).The training I received,though excellent,did not tell me how it was to work with a real student,however.When I began to discover what other people's lives were like because they could not read,I realized the true importance of reading.

  As we worked together,learning how to read built Marie's self-confidence(自信心),which encouraged her to continue in her studies.She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket.After this successful trip,she reported how self-confident she felt.At the end of the program,she began helping her youngest son,Tony,a shy first grader,with his reading.She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories.When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read,pride was written all over her face,and she began to see how her own hard work in learning to read paid off.As she described this experience,I was proud of myself as well.I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.

  As a literacy volunteer,I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others.In fact,I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.

It was Monday. Mrs. Smith's dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house.
  Considering that there was no better way.  Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth, but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.

  Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.

  Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas (通俗电视连续剧) and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.

  “Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe middle and upper class values-not many children, different attitudes towards life, women working,” says Martine. “They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people aware of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.”
