In 1997, a group of twenty British women made history. Working
in five teams with four women in each team, they walked to the
North Pole. Apart from one experienced female guide, the other
women were all ordinary people who had never done anything like
this in their lives before. They managed to survive in an environment
and defeated several very experienced men during the same
period.
Once on the ice, each woman had to ski along while dragging a
sledge (雪橇) weighing over 50 kilos. The Arctic ice was pushed up
into huge piles two or three meters high, and the sledges had to be
pulled up one side and carefully let down the other all on the rough
surface so that they didn't become damaged. The temperature was
always below the freezing point and sometimes strong winds made
walking while pulling so much weight almost impossible. It was also
very difficult for them to put up their tents when they stopped each
night.
In such conditions ,'the women were making good progress if
they covered fourteen or fifteen kilometers a day. However, part of
the journey was across a frozen sea with moving water underneath
the ice and at some points the team would drift(漂流) back more
than five kilometers during the night. That meant that after walking
in these very severe conditions for ten hours on one day, they had to
spend part of the next day covering the same ground again.
So,how did they manage to succeed? They realized that they
were part of a team. If any one of them didn't pull her sledge or get
her job done, she would endanger the success of the whole expedition.
Any form of selfishness could result in the efforts of everyone
else being completely wasted, so personal feelings had to be put to
one side. At the end of their journey, the women agreed that it was
mental effort far more than physical fitness that got them to the
North Pole.
1. The expedition was extraordinary because________.
A. there was no one to lead it
B. the women did not have any men with them
C. it was a new experience for most of the women
D. the women had not met one another before
2. On the expedition, the women had to be particularly careful to avoid_______.
A. falling over on the ice
B. being left behind
C. damaging the sledges
D. getting too cold at night
3. The women could not cover 15 kilometers a day mainly because______.
A. they got too tired
B. the ice was moving
C. they kept getting lost
D. the temperatures were too low
4. The passage seems to tell us that_________.
A. motivation and teamwork achieve goals
B. women can do anything they want
C. it is good to experience difficult conditions
D. the Arctic conditions are very severe

C
Not many years ago, some American farmers began to complain about hawks(鹰). The hawks were killing chickens. The farmers did not know what to do. They went to the government officials and asked for help.
The officials said, “ We’ll pay you for each hawk you kill.” The farmers began to kill the hawks. Many hawks were killed, but the farmers now had another problem. The field mice were growing in number and they were eating up the farmers’ corn. Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But if the farmers had known that, they would not have upset(打乱) the balance of nature. In one part of the USA, there are deer which eat a kind of wild rose. The deer are eaten by mountain lions. The number of deer, mountain lions, and wild rose does not change much if people stay away from them. If there are too many deer, mountain lions will increase rapidly in number and kill many deer. If there are too many mountain lions, there will be fewer deer and there will be more roses.
It is always necessary for us to keep the balance of nature. The government once killed almost all the mountain lions to protect the deer. Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the wild roses. Then they began to eat the green leaves of young trees which were important to the farmers.
So the farmers protected their trees from the deer. The deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died.
The government learned a valuable lesson from nature.
44. What had happened after the hawks were killed?
A. People wouldn’t worry about their chickens.
B. The number of the field mice became too large.
C. The number of the field mice became small.
D. The field mice were eating up the farmers’ corn.
45. Why did American people have to protect their trees?
A. Because the mountain lions destroyed the trees.
B. Because there were so many deer that they began to eat the green leaves.
C. Because they wanted the trees to grow well.
D. Because the trees are more important than the deer.
46. What can we learn from the article?
A. We must keep the balance of nature.
B. We must not kill any animals.
C. we must feed the hawks with our corn to keep the balance of nature.
D. Both A and B.

完形填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)
My grandmother became a widow in 1970. Shortly after that, we went to the  21 shelter to pick out a dog to keep her  22 . Grandma decided on a little dog with a reddish-brown spot above each eye.  23 these spots, the dog was named Penny.
Grandma and Penny quickly became very  24 to each other, but that attachment grew much stronger about three years later  25 Grandma had a stroke(中风). Grandma could no longer  26 , so when she came home from the hospital, she and Penny were  27 companions.
After her stroke, it became a real  28 for Grandma to let Penny in and out because  29 was at the bottom of a flight of stairs. So a mechanism(机械装置)using a rope and pulley(滑轮)was   30 from the door to a handle at the top of the stairs. Grandma just had to pull the handle to open and close the door. If the store was   31 Penny’s favorite dog food, Grandma would make one of us  32 Penny browned beef with potatoes in it. I can remember   33 my grandmother by saying that she loved that dog better than she loved her family.
As the years passed, it was not  34 for Grandma and Penny to separate each other. If Grandma went to take her nap(打盹), Penny stayed by her side until she  35 . As Penny aged, she could no longer jump up on the bed, so she   36 on the rug (垫子)beside the bed. If Grandma went into the   37 , Penny would walk along beside her, wait outside the door and accompany her   38 to the bed or chair. Grandma never went anywhere without her   39 companion by her side.
The time came when both my grandmother’s and Penny’s   40 were failing fast. After fifteen years of loving companionship, Grandma and Penny passed away within a few hours of each other.
