Every year, malaria (疟疾) sickens about five hundred million people. More than one million of them die, mostly young children and pregnant women in Africa.
For several years in sub-Saharan Africa, the Global Fund and other groups have been paying for bed nets treated with long-lasting insect poison. Malaria is spread by mosquito bites. The groups have also invested in ant malaria drugs for A.C.T., artemisinin-based combination therapy.
Recently, a team from the World Health Organization visited Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda and Zambia. These countries were the first to distribute the bed nets and medicine. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis(肺结核)and Malaria requested a study to see if the interventions were helping.
The researchers found that the answer is yes. They looked at records of children under five. They found that malaria deaths fell by sixty-six percent in Rwanda between two thousand five and two thousand seven. Deaths fell by fifty-one percent in Ethiopia, thirty-four percent in Ghana and thirty-three percent in Zambia.
The team reported that limited supplies of bed nets could help explain the more limited effects in Zambia and Ghana. But the findings in Ghana were more difficult to explain, because deaths from causes other than malaria fell more sharply. The report says this was in keeping with general improvements in health services.
The full report can be found at who. int, on the page for the global malaria program.
In another new study, researchers reported that vitamin A and zinc treatments might also help protect young children from malaria. Scientists in Burkina Faso found that malaria rainfection rates fell by thirty – four percent in a group of children treated with vitamin A and zinc.
The findings appear in Nutrition Journal, an open access publication that can be read free of charge at nutrition. com.

A picture, a calender or even a balloon may be the best way for millions of people living in China's vast country areas to learn about AIDS, one of the biggest threats to public health in the world today.
China has decided to use user-friendly methods including exhibitions, VCDs and TV programmes to spread knowledge of the disease across the nation to try to keep it in check.
Educating people nationwide about AIDS is the top priority(the thing that you think is most important) to prevent the disease from getting out of hand. The farmers will be given knowledge in the easiest way that they can understand.
A recent survey from the commission of more than 7 000 people in China showed that nearly 20 percent of them had never heard of AIDS. Just over 71 percent said they knew AIDS was highly infectious, but most d them had no clear idea of how the disease could be spread. Just over 62 percent said they knew they could do things in advance to prevent them catching AIDS but they didn't know what these measures were.
The month-long survey, carried out last December, talked to people in seven countries and cities across China including both developed coastal areas and the less-developed inland areas. The interviewees ranged from 15 to 49 years old, and country residents were about 63 % of the total surveyed.
Chinese residents, especially those in the country, have very little knowledge about what AIDS is all about, not to mention prevention and treatment. By the end of last year, there were 22517 known HIV/AIDS cases in China. However, more than 6000000 people in China have been infected.
Since 1985, China has discovered 880 patients with AIDS — 466 of them have died. Sharing needles, prostitution and contaminated blood transfusions are major ways for HIV to spread. A lack of education has been the biggest difficulty against nationwide efforts to prevent AIDS, especially in the countryside.

However, nowadays piracy has become a multi-million dollar business attracting many in poor countries such as Somalia.“The pirates are well funded and have all the latest equipment, including satellite phones,”said a top UN representative in Somalia.
In Asia, however,a trend started where pirates didn't just want to kidnap the stuff, they also wanted to control the ship. They would kill the crewmembers or kidnap them for ransom(赎金).
