The space shuttle Columbia flared and broke up in the skies over Texas on Saturday, February 1,2003, killing the seven astronauts on board in what NASA and President Bush called a tragedy for the entire nation. NASA launched an investigation into the disaster and began searching for the astronauts'remains. It said that although there had been some data failures, it was too early to nail down a precise cause. The break-up, 16 minutes before the shuttle was due to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, spread possibly toxic debris (有毒的残骸) over a wide swath of Texas and neighboring states.

Dramatic television images of the shuttle's descent clearly showed several white trails (痕迹) streaking through blue skies after the shuttle suddenly fell apart. It was almost 17 years to the day that the Challenger shuttle exploded on Jan 28, 1986, killing all seven astronauts on board. Take-off and reentry into Earth's atmosphere are the most dangerous parts of a space mission. In 42 years of US' human space flight, there had never been an accident in the descent to Earth or landing. Challenger exploded just after take-off.

Rescue teams scrambled to search for the remains of the crew, which included the first lsraeli to fly on the shuttle, former combat pilot Collan Ramon. There were warnings that parts of a vast 120-milelong corridor of debris could be toxic because of poisonous rocket propellant (推进器).

“We are not ready to confirm that we have found any human remains”, Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerrs said He added that among the roughly 1,000 calls reporting debris, some people said they had found remains of crew members.

“The Columbia is lost. There are no survivors,……Their mission was almost complete and we lost them so close to home……America's space program will go on,”said a grim-faced Bush in a message broadcast on television, which included condolences (吊慰) to the families of the dead astronauts.

China has mapped out plans for its new launches in the Shenzhou program on the next flight. But one conclusion seems to have escaped most reports in the aerospace media. The flight of Shenzhou 7 could be timed to coincide(吻合)with the Beijing Olympics. Plans for 2008 Summer Olympics call for the events to be held between the 8th and 24th of August in that year. It’s reasonable to expect that China will use the event to display its achievements before the world, and human spaceflight is China’s most significant recent breakthrough.

Shenzhou 7, China’s next manned space mission, was originally advertised for 2007.This fit the pattern of staging a two-gap between crewed Shenzhou missions, which have previously launched in 2003 and 2005.But Chinese media statements have amended this to 2008.Chinese media have reported that the whole program is going well, more time is needed to work on spacesuit that will be used on this flight to stage China’s first spacewalk. It’s possible that Chinese engineers want to make best preparations for this complex mission.

China could intend to carry out the mission of Shenzhou 7 just as media attention is focused on the lead—up to the Olympics. The crew of the fight, and possibly China’s other flown astronauts, could then take part in the opening ceremony. China has previously honnoured her space travelers in great celebrations, such as the Hong Kong event that saw Yang Liwei singing with Jacky Chan.

Beijing(AFP)Oct.17, 2005-China’s second manned space mission returned safely to Earth early Monday after a successful five –day flight, in the latest chapter in China’s ambitious drive to become a global space power.

Astronauts Fei Junling and Nie Haisheng were given a clean bill of health after the re-entry capsule(返回舱)of their Shenzhou VI spacecraft landed on Earth on a parachute, ending up in Inner Mongolia, Xinhua news agency said.

“Our journey in space was very smooth. The living and working conditions inside the cabin were very good, and our health is okay. Thanks,” Fei said on state television, with a smile.

Appearing from the capsule, television pictures showed the two took a few seconds to adjust to the Earth’s gravity, before begin presented with flowers and waving to gathered recovery teams and ground control staff.

Mission control declared the 115-hour space flight a success, Xinhua reported.

A member of one of the recovery teams reported that the capsule landed upright after touching down at 4∶32 am(20∶32 GMT Sunday), just one kilometer(1,100 yards)from the intended landing site, it added.

The flight was China’s second-ever manned space mission following the historic Shenzhou V, which in October 2003 made China the third nation after the former Soviet Union and the United States to put a man into space.

During his 21-hour first flight in 2003, astronaut Yang Liwei never left his seat in the re-entry capsule nor took off his space suit.In contrast, Fei and Nie’s flight saw them leave the re-entry capsule and enter the orbital capsule(轨道舱), taking off their heavy suits and putting on ordinary work clothes so they could move around easily.

To remove worries that China could use space for military purposes, Premier Wen Jiabao said the purpose of the mission was to conduct experiments “entirely for peaceful purposes.”

The Chinese government also hopes to use the manned space program to inspire patriotism(爱国精神)and instill a curiosity in science and technology among Chinese population.

On October 16th, 2003, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei's smile was seen across the world above the magic words:“China's first spaceman”.The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9∶00 am on 15th by China's Shenzhou V spacecraft, which orbited(绕轨道而行)the earth 14 times. He landed safely at 6∶23 am the next day, making China the third country to successfully send a person into space, after the former(以前的)Soviet Union(苏联)and the US.Yang was satisfied with his job.“I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful, ”he said on a special plane to Beijing after landing.

While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China's national flag and the United Nations'flag to the people watching on TV at home.He also ate a meal of chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap(小睡).The whole project went according to the plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems. He experienced extremely high temperatures, while the gravitational forces(地心引力)on take-off and landing were strong enough to force tears from his eyes.

Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Forces in 1987, spending 1,350 hours in the air.He joined the Chinese space program 11 years later. He has spent five years training to become a spaceman.“I eat all of my meals at the space programmer's dining room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten, ”he said.“I've never met his teachers. But becoming China's first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile.“When I boarded the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn't help feeling excited, ”he said.“I decided that I had to fly it.”To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. His trip is a giant leap forward for China.
