Open a large handkerchief out and show both sides of it to your friends. Point out that there is nothing in it; then show them both sides of your hands, which are also empty. Now ask a member of your audience to give you a match. Ask him to put a mark on it with a pen or a pencil. Fold up the handkerchief with the match in it, and let everyone present see you do this.

Give the handkerchief to anyone in the audience and say:“Here′s the match. Can you feel it? Good! Now I want you to break it into two pieces.”When he or she has broken the match, you say “Would anyone like to feel the broken match in this handkerchief?”several people will probably want to feel it. When they have satisfied themselves that the match really is broken, you say,“Now I′m going to make the match whole again.”Perhaps your friends will say that  is impossible.

Hold the handkerchief in one hand and pass your hand or your wand(magic stick)over it, saying:“Abracadabra, abracadabra.”Open the handkerchief and let the match fall on to the table or floor, saying“Presto”as it does so. When the audience examine the match, they will find that it is quite whole and undamaged. The member of the audience will see his mark on the match. Everyone will be amazed!

The secret of this trick is quite simple, as in all magic tricks. Long before you do the trick you must do one thing-you must push one of your own matches into the hem(摺边)of the handkerchief. This must be pushed well along the hem so that it cannot fall out or be seen. When you have wrapped up the match provided by a member of the audience you must take care that it is the match in the hem which is broken, and not the other. You should practice the trick in private, of course, before you perform it before an audience.

Anna Whitney, a sophomore (大学二年级学生) at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college. “I was always 1 prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I would not answer the questions 2 . I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answers. My 3 grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher.”Another student in microbiology had 4 experiences. He said,“My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was 5 . My hands were moving up and down so 6 that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn't 7 write them down!”

These two young students were 8 something called test anxiety (考试焦虑)。Because a student worries and is anxious about a test, his or her 9 does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think 10 because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a 11 of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently, test anxiety has been as a real problem, not just an 12 or a false explanation of lazy students.

Special university counseling(指导) courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them 13 to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to 14 their tension. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become 15 in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds 16 at ease (安心). 17 information then comes out without difficulty on a test.

An 18 at the University of California explains,“With almost all students, relaxation and 19 stress are felt after taking our program. Most of them experience better control 20 their tests. Almost all have some improvement.”

How can you find out what is going on inside a person’ s body without opening the patient up?Regular X-rays can show a lot.CAT scans can show even more. They can give three-dimensional(三维)view of body organs(器官).

What is a CAT scan?CAT stands for Computerized Axial Tomography(层面X线照相术).It is a special X-ray machine that gets a 360-degree picture of a small area of a patient’s body.

Doctors use X-rays to study and examine diseases and injuries within the body.X-rays can find foreign objects inside the body or to take pictures of some organs inside if special things as dyes or special liquids are added to the organs to be X-rayed.

A CAT scanner, however, uses a beam(光束)of X-rays to give a cross-sectional view of a particular part of the body.A fine beam of X-rays is scanned across the body and circled around the patient from many different angles(角度).A computer analyzes(分析)the information from each angle and produces a clear cross-sectional picture on the screen.

This picture is then photographed for later use.Several cross-sections, taken one after another, can give a clear“photo”of the entire body or of any body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give a clear picture of active, moving organs just as a fast-action camera can“stop the action”giving clear pictures of what appear only mistily(模糊)to the eye.And because of the 360-degree pictures, CAT scans show 3-dimensional views of organs in a manner that was once only seen during surgery or autopsy(examining a dead body).

[ ]

A.

the newest pictures become more misty

B.

many pictures can be taken at the same time

C.

the information about the scanned patient is not highly valued

D.

some pictures of the scanned parts of the body are developed for further examinations in the future

(3)

The best title of this passage might be ________.

[ ]

A.

Modern X-ray

B.

Three-dimensional View

C.
