people think that Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents in the
history of the USA. He passed laws against slavery(奴隶制) and kept the United States united.
Lincoln was born in a poor family in 1809. His father was a carpenter(木匠) and farmer. Lincoln often played the piano when he was a child. And he was so interested in reading that he always borrowed books from his neighbours.
In 1830, Lincoln moved to Illinois, one of the states of America. From 1834 to 1840 he was a member of the Illinois government. He had many jobs in Illinois. At the same time, he studied to become a lawyer. And he became one in 1836 and was very successful.
From 1846 to 1849, he was a member of the US government. He spoke against slavery. From 1849 to 1860, he made a great many of his famous speeches.
In 1861, Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States. In 1862, he announced the end of slavery.
In 1865 Lincoln was shot by Wilkes Booth. Booth hated Lincoln because Lincoln had passed laws freeing the slaves.
People remember Lincoln for a great many things. He helped end slavery in the United States. He won the Civil War and kept the United States united. He also gave many speeches and wrote many famous letters. He is also famous because he came from a poor family, but through hard work, became President of the United States.
