Dear editor, I came top of my class in a recent English e . My classmates want me to t them to dinner to celebrate. But I don’t have enough money. I don’t want to disappoint them, but I really can’t afford a big m for lots of people. What should I do? Liu Shan, Hunan Dear Liu Shan, The answer is really quite simple: if you don’t have enough m , then you can’t t your friends out for a meal. I know it seems a difficult situation, but if these friends are r friends, they will understand. Explain to them that you just don’t have enough money. A who can’t understand this and makes you bad is not a real friend to you. Why not suggest some other way of celebrating with your classmate? Why don’t you invite them to your h .if possible, for an evening? You could watch a film or play games, and would probably end up having more fun than you would at a meal. Or, if you can afford this, why not c them a meal at your house? That may be cheaper than eating in a restaurant. If you really have no money, why not suggest a p , where everyone is expected to bring one item of food or drink, and everyone shares? 查看更多

  Dear Editor,

I’m confused these days.We are taught at home and at school that violence(暴力)is bad.For example, last week, my friend and I were playing at the beach. We found a really beautiful shell. My friend picked it up, but I saw it first, and I said it was mine.He said, no, it was his.I really want the shell, and I even thought about hitting him, that’s how angry I was.

Now should that be right? No !I shouldn’t use violence.I should talk with my friend instead, and solve that.My parents and teachers often tell me that using violence is the least civilized(文明)way to solve problems.

So, if adults had a disagreement, and if they used violence toward each other in order to win, is it all right ?No!

Now, I’m confused. When two countries disagree, they often use violence. They fight a war.Using violence is not okey at home, at school, or in your country but okey between two countries, why?

A war is extreme violence. So not only soldiers but citizens(公民), including small children and babies have been killed and injured because of wars.

Adults say they are fighting wars in order to solve problems and make peace. But can you really “make peace” by using violence and killing so many people?

I don’t think that bombs and missiles(炸弹和导弹)can reach people’s hearts and change them.Bombs and missiles can’t create love and caring, and that’s what we need in the world. Why can’t they use their wisdom(智慧)and talk it over?

[ ]

A.

Violence can solve the problems.

B.

C.

D.

Bombs and missiles can reach people’s hearts.

(4)

What does the sentence “Bombs and missiles can’t create love and caring, and that’s what we need in the world.” mean?

[ ]

A.

We need to use violence to solve problems.

B.

What we need is bombs and missiles.

We need bombs and missiles to create love and caring.

Letter Two

  Dear Li Ping,

I think it’s not strange for parents to keep their children away from anything bad.Foreign parents will do the same as your parents! They may not let their children watch TV for too long a time, or like your parents, they don’t want their children to play computer games.

Talk to your parents and be honest(诚实)to them, I think.Tell them what you are doing and why you are doing so to make them understand you. It’s never good to do things behind your parents’ backs. They aren’t fools as you think sometimes! Our parents seem to know what is the best for us.Remember:to be honest is the best way.

Good luck,

Rebecca
