Scientists at the California Institute of Technology have reported evidence that Mars was warmer and wetter long ago than it is today. They say they have directly established(证实)the temperature of Mars four billion years ago.

The scientists say carbonate minerals(碳酸盐矿物)formed on Mars at about 18℃.They reached the finding after studying a meteorite(陨星)that had its beginnings near the Martian surface.Today, the average temperature on Mars is-63℃.

The finding was reported on the website of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Assistant Professor Woody says 18°C is not especially cold or hot.He says this makes the finding extremely interesting.Knowing the temperature can give scientists an idea of the climate on Mars long ago.It can also help them decide whether the planet had water.

Geology Professor John was another writer of the report. He says knowing the temperature of Mars from long ago provides valuable information. It shows that early in the planet's history, at least part of Mars could support a climate like that of Earth.

(1)

The report says that scientists have proved that ________.

[ ]

A.

Mars was not a planet for any form of life

only ice can be found on Mars now

(2)

How did the scientists establish the temperature on Mars billions of years ago?

[ ]

A.

By studying a meteorite.

By taking lots of images.

By traveling around the planet.

D.

By making carbonate minerals.
