Benjamin Banneker was born a few months before another great American- George Washington. Benjamin was black, but he was not a slave. He and his mother and his grandmother were free. Benjamin's grandmother came from England. In America she got a job and worked for many years to pay for her boat trip across the ocean . Banneker worked hard on the plans for the city. He marked where the streets and buildings-the Capitol (美国国会大厦) the White House, and many others-should be built. Later, L' Enfant, the Frenchman who had designed the new city, had a quarrel, and went back to France in anger. He took all of the plans with him. The workmen couldn't build without any plans to follow. For a while it seemed that the plans for the capital might have to be changed, but Benjamin Banneker remembered the plans he had helped draw. He drew each again as he had built each piece of his clock. If it weren't for Benjamin Banneker, Washington, D.C might look very different from the way it does today. |

One Sunday morning, I was running late for work. As I drove off, I noticed an elderly lady from the neighborhood. She was pulling a large piece of wood out of the rain. I wanted to help, but I was in a hurry.
I hesitated （犹豫） for a moment. Then I stopped my car, got out and helped her move the wood. Months went by. Then one day, I was walking in the street and saw some workmen cleaning out an old store. There in the dark and dirty corner was a large Coca-Cola cooler. How fun! The workmen said I could have it, so I picked it up and started home. I didn’t get very far. It was much heavier than I thought. How could I get this to my home? Then out of the blue, the elderly lady appeared — with a handcart! I had helped her, and just when I needed it, she was there and returned the favor （帮忙）.

Going to the hospital is no fun —— especially when you live in a foreign culture. I recently went to see a doctor in the US. When I got there, I discovered I had forgotten to bring enough money to pay for my treatment. I had my credit card in my pocket, and I thought I could use that. However, I was wrong! For some reason, my card didn’t work. And even the hospital’s ATM wouldn’t let me take money. Since I couldn’t pay, I couldn’t get the treatment I needed.
I was so sad that I began to cry. Unluckily, when I started crying, I had trouble stopping. I was making quite a big noise!
Everybody else in line was getting impatient （不耐烦的）. Just at that very moment, a lovely Irish woman appeared and asked me what I needed. I told her my problem. She immediately handed me $1,000, along with her business card, so I could repay her later.
I was able to pay and get the treatment. When I got back home, I emailed the Irish woman. We’ve been in touch ever since!

When this story happened, they were working around a very large house. Their job was to do the cleaning. It was not a difficult job, but sometimes it was a little dangerous, because they had to walk below where workmen were working. Often these workmen dropped something from the top of the house many meters high to the ground.
One morning Joe was working near the house with a cigarette behind one of his ears. Suddenly somebody on the top shouted, "Look out!" But Joe did not "look out". He looked up. And as he did so, a long knife missed Joe's head, but it cut off one of his ears. At once he put his hand to one side of his head and cried out, "I've lost an ear. Help! Help!"
Jeff ran up to help his friend. "Look for my ear," Joe told him. "It must be on the ground somewhere." Jeff looked everywhere for the missing ear. At last he found an ear on the ground. He picked it up and carried it to Joe. "Here you are," he said, "I've found it." Joe looked at it. "No, that's not my ear." he said, "Mine had a cigarette behind it."
