    Why read this book to find out how to win friends? Why not study the technique of the greatest winner of friends the word has ever known? Who is he?     When I was five years old，my father bought a little yellow—haired young dog for fifty cents．He was the light and joy of my childhood．Every afternoon around four thirty，he would sit in the front yard with his beautiful eyes staring at the road, and as soon as he heard my voice or saw me through the brush, he was off like a shot, racing breathlessly up the hill to greet me with leaps of joy and barks of cheer.

    Tippy was my good companion for five years．Then one night — I shall never forget it—he was killed within ten feet of my head, killed by lightning ．Tippy’ s death was the tragedy event of my childhood.

    You never read a book on psychology, Tippy．You didn’t need to．You knew that one can make more friends in months by  being really interested in other people than one can in two years by trying to get other people interested in him．Let me repeat that .you can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.

         Proverbs are quite common in spoken English. We don't normally put them in a composition or a letter.
    Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples.
         1) "Once bitten, twice shy." If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This
    proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you
    will not go the same shop again.
         2) "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to
    catch one than to see two birds in a bush but not able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have
    already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.
         3) "Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)". When too many people do something, they get in each other's
    way and do a bad job.
         4) "To pour oil on troubled waters" is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in
    trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people.
    However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.
         5) "Don't be a dog in a manger( 槽 )" means " Don't be selfish." In a stable ( 马房 ), the manger is the
    place where the horse's food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes
    to get its food. The dog does want to eat the lay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.
         6) "He is sitting on the fence" means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against
    it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.
         7) "He who pays the piper calls the tune." A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician
    can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say
    how it will be carried out.
         8) "You can't get blood out of a stone" means that you cannot get something from a person who has not
    got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.

    breath, and pretended to be dead as much as he could. The bear soon left him, for he will not touch a dead
    body. When he disappeared, the other traveler slid down from the tree, and asked his friend what it was the
    bear had whispered in his ear. "He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend
    who deserts you at the approach of danger."

    cock, "to man, but for me I would rather have a single corn."

         Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up in anger, he caught him and
    was about to kill him, when the Mouse pitifully begged, saying:"If you would only spare my life, I would be
    sure to repay your kindness." The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was
    caught by some hunters, who tied him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came
    up, and bit the rope with his teeth, and setting him free, exclaimed:"You joked the idea of my ever being able
    to help you, not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor. But now you know that it is
    possible for even a Mouse to grand benefits on a Lion."

    Last week, I bought an alarm system(报警系统) for about $ 450. It consisted of a control unit with three other small units. I put the control unit in the sitting room and fastened the other units by the front door, back door and living-room windows. The instructions told us to choose three numbers, so we chose 491, the last three numbers of our telephone number.

    Now I must explain how the alarm works:

    1. There is a power siren(警报器) in the control unit. It makes a very loud noise.

    2. Each of the small units sends out beams(光束) or rays in different directions. If anything moves, it breaks a beam. This sends a signal to the control unit. The siren makes a noise that you can hear 50 meters away.

    3. When we go to bed, I press the three buttons numbered 4, 9 and 1. Then we have 30 seconds to get out of the room before the alarm starts to work.

    That might I slept soundly because I was sure that no burglar(夜贼) could get into our house. However, at about 2:10a.m., I woke up and heard the siren(警报).

    “There must be a burglar in the house,” Mary said. “What shall we do?”

    “I’ll go and see who’s there,” I said. “Stay here. Don’t make a noise.”

    I went downstairs quietly. When I reached the living room, I switched on my torch and looked round the room. Then I turned the light on. I switched the siren off and searched the rooms downstairs. There was nothing wrong except that the back door was unlocked. I locked it, re-set the alarm and went back to bed.

    About an hour later, the alarm started again. I jumped out of bed, fell over a chair in the dark and bumped into the bedroom door. Mary woke up and started hitting me with a torch. “Hey! Wait a minute!” I whispered. “It’s only me. I’ m going downstairs to see what’s wrong.”

    I went down into the living room and listened for a moment. The only sound I could hear was the siren. I turned on the light and then switched the siren off. As I did so, I glanced across at the curtains in front of the windows. I saw a house lizard (蜥蜴) disappear behind the curtains.

    “Oh!” I said to myself. “That’s our burglar.”

    When the lizard moved, it started the siren. I guessed that the alarm had been made in Europe, where there are no house lizards.

    Well, I won’t finish this story but if you want an alarm system free of charge, let me know. I’ll send you ours. We bought a dog this morning. It knows the difference between a lizard and a burglar.
