题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Three foreign gentlemen came up to a busstop in London.About five minutes later the bus which they waited for came along. They prepared to get on it.Suddenly there was a noise behind them.People rushed on to the bus and tried to push them out of the way.Someone shouted at them. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of waiting for a bus so that the first who arrives at the busstop is the first person to get on the bus.

Learning the language of a country is not enough. One should know as much as possible about the manners and customs of different countries. You’ll be surprised how different they can be from your own.For example,in India, people consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. In many places you might see a person shaking his head at another to express he is disagreeing, but in Bulgaria a shake of the head means “Yes” and a nod means “No”.In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting talking to someone, but in Thailand,it is considered impolite.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Collections were the inspiration(灵感)for a project at Thomas Tallis School, which formed part of the Imagine Children's Literature Festival last autumn. Each child(aged 12~13)beautified a box and wrote a story on the subject of collections to throw inside it.The boxes were spread within the Royal Festival Hall's Ballroom. Some were left empty to encourage visitors to write their own stories.

The subject chosen by Lauren was an imaginative one.“It's a sort of Cinderella(灰姑娘)story,”she told me,inspired by a collection of letters from her cousin. In the story these become love letters, burned by a cruel stepmother.Lauren's best friend Charlotte is the stepmother.“I'm in Charlotte's story, too,”says Lauren,“and I get run over.”Charlotte's tale was inspired by the girl's coin collection.“We've collected foreign coins for years-since our families went on holiday to Tenerife.”she explains.“That was before the Euro,so we put pesetas in.”Lauren continues.“I find a coin in the road,go to get it and get run over.I'm in hospital and then I die.”Charlotte adds,“Or she might not die.I haven't decided yet.”

Mitlie Murray, who is a teen-novel author, thinks that setting the subject of collections was a useful inspiration to their creativity rather than a restriction(限制).

“In the beginning I thought,‘Will the children be able to do it?’”she says.“But it's been fruitful. Some have their own collection, some have parents who do,and some have written complete stories. It's made them think about something they wouldn't have otherwise, which can only be a good thing.”

Adult Education in the U. S.

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.

Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.

Secretaries, mechanics, and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. Nurses can take classes to increase their knowledge of nursing. If they know more or learn more, then they can get a better job or earn more money.

Continuing education classes give some adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from, typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available.

Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. For example, they can choose a class in almost any language, Chinese, Spanish, or English as a second language. There are classes in first aid or classes in sewing. There are also many other types of classes to choose from.

Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. Overweight people can find exercise classes or classes in nutrition. Others can learn how to be good parents, or how to get along with other people.

There are many opportunities for adults to continue their learning. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings, or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.

Thousands of people register for continuing education classes each year. They receive no diploma or certificate, and no grade for most of the classes they attend. For them, learning is something they do because they want to.
