About 4,500 different characters have been counted, and 1,700 of them understood. They show the basic ideas of character construction, sentence structure, and grammar. Anyang is the site of former capital city of the late Shang Dynasty (商朝). It was the first dynasty to leave written historical records containing information on politics, the economy, culture, geography, astronomy (天文学), art and medicine.

Chinese characters which developed from the inscriptions at Anyang are still in use today. The importance of these characters was first recognized in 1899 by Wang Yirong, an official in the Qing Dynasty. Wang fell ill and so a doctor supplied "longgu"(dragon bones) to make him better. The bones turned out to be pieces of tortoise shell (龟壳), each carrying strange carved patterns. Wang, who knew a lot about calligraphy (书法), studied the white pieces of bone. He finally put them together to form one big tortoise shell, on which was several Shang Dynasty characters.
