　　Is it possible that the people of the world today could agree upon a single international language that everyone would be able to speak and understand?

　　In the United Nations there are five official languages English, Chinese, Russian, French and Spanish. How about making one of them into an international language? English has been worked on for this purpose. A basic word list of about 850 English words named Basic English was made. These are the only verbs in the entire list:“come, go, give, keep, let, do, put, make, say, be, seem, may, will, have, send”. Writing in Basic English may require you to use a greater number of words——as in having to say“it came to my ears”instead of “I heard”——but you can still say anything you want to with about 850 different words and a few suffixes and prefixes. DOES the Yangtze River still have baiji（白鳍豚）, the graceful, grey dolphin with tiny eyes and a long narrow beak? Since November 6, a team of scientists from China, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Japan have been searching for any sign of the freshwater dolphin on the middle and lower sections of the river. After six weeks, they came back empty-handed.

Wang Ding, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is the head of the team, said he has seen a sharp decline in the baiji population over the past few decades. However, he is still unwilling to call the species extinct, and adds, “We will try every effort to save them as long as they are not found to be extinct.”

The baiji is shy and nearly blind and is one of the world’s oldest dolphin species. It dates back some 20 million years and is found only in the Yangtze. It's listed as one of the 12 most endangered animal species in the world.

Around 400 baiji were believed to be living in the Yangtze until the 1980s. 1 A 1997 survey spotted 13. Two years later their numbers were down to two.

The rapid disappearance of this dolphin over the past two decades coincided with the rapid expansion of economic development along the river. Research on some dead baiji collected in recent years showed that more than 90 per cent of the deaths were caused by human activities.

One reason is that over-fishing has cut the dolphin's food sources. Dams built along the river and neighbouring waterways have also kept them from swimming into and out of their habitats (居住地). Meanwhile, waste discharge (排放) has seriously polluted the river. And heavy river traffic has greatly reduced their living space.

The disappearance of the baiji would be the first instance of a large aquatic (水生的) mammal being driven to extinction since hunting killed off the monk seal around 1952.

    For a small town, Manhattan, Kansas has some big surprises. And one of them is the Holiday

Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly family atmosphere.

The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party, or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the brightly lighted restaurant near the pool. And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more than two years.

Ellen, like most of the waitresses, is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but she’s planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.

Ellen soon learned what every waitress finds out. Her best friends has a good pair of shoes. She paid forty-five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. She’s discovered something else too. You don’t have to know much about food to be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.

“A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan,” she explains, “They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who can’t make up their minds. They look down the menu and say ‘What do you suggest?’ So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say, ‘Not very’, I suggest the salad bar, with soup, salad, bread, and a fruit plate. But if they say they’re very hungry, I suggest a Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well. It’s very nice. Real good value.”

Ellen may get tired feet sometimes, but at least she’s learning too much about people. She’ll probably make a good animal doctor. If she finds she doesn’t like it after all, she can always become a psychiatrist(心理医生) instead.
