A fresh wave of selling hit China's stocks on Wednesday, pushing a key index(指数) down more than 5 percent, amid a mixture of lingering worries.
The Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 5.5 percent to 3,413.90 points, marking a loss of 44.26 percent drop from its peak in Mid-October.
Analysts said the decline was a natural correction as the gauge surged nearly 400 points after touching the lowest level in nearly a year last Thursday.
Worries over temporary liquidity might also be a factor, as a new wave of initial public offerings started this week after a 40-day gap.
In the past few months, investors in the country have flocked to the primary market for almost risk-free gains as volatility(反复无常的) increased in the secondary market. However, that trend might slow down as several major players have fallen below their IPO prices.
What also weighed on investors' sentiments(情绪) are concerns about further monetary tightening to fight inflation, which hit 8.7 percent in February. It is widely believed that the March figure, while easing a bit, will stay above 8 percent.
Fears over a decline in corporate earnings, the cornerstone of a bull market, due to the impact of the credit crisis in the United States and a faster appreciating yuan, added to the selling pressure.
Less than 10 percent of the 1,400 stocks in the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses posted gains, while trading volume shrank slightly to some 124 billion yuan.
Blue chips(蓝筹股) led the decline, with PetroChina tumbling 4.84 percent to 17.32 yuan per share, approaching its IPO price of 16.7 yuan.
Financial shares continued their weak performance. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China fell 4.6 percent to 6.01 yuan, while China Life nosedived 7.34 percent to 30.16 yuan.

Retailers may be fined up to 10,000 yuan ($1,430) for providing free plastic bags to shoppers, the Ministry of Commerce has proposed.
The penalty will take effect from June 1, according to a draft regulation published on the ministry's website to solicit public opinion till April 14.
The move follows a ban announced in January on the manufacture, sale and use of ultra-thin plastic bags (defined as less than 0.025 mm thick) from June 1 as part of efforts to protect the environment and save energy.
The draft regulation says retailers can set the price for plastic bags, but not below cost.
They also have to include the price of the bags on customer receipts, or face fines of up to 5,000 yuan.
The regulation does not apply to plastic packaging for frozen or cooked food.
Meanwhile, retailers have to allow customers to carry their own bags or baskets; and are encouraged to provide eco-friendly substitutes.
Retailers believe the regulation will help reduce the use of plastic bags.
"We have been encouraging customers to bring bags, and we think most of them will choose to do so when we stop providing free bags," said Li Li, head cashier at a Beijing WuMart supermarket.
Most customers asked for their opinions by China Daily at the supermarket welcomed the ban.
"I will bring a large fabric bag, and I don't think it will cause any inconvenience. It is a good policy to protect our environment," said a retired worker surnamed Wang.

The damage caused in the March 14 Lhasa riots is estimated at 280 million yuan ($40 million), almost double the earlier figure of 150 million yuan ($21.4 million), Tibet's top official said Wednesday.
Eighteen people were killed and hundreds injured in the riots.
"As chairman of the Tibet autonomous region, I failed to protect the people in Lhasa. I deeply apologize for that," Qiangba Puncog told a press conference organized by the State Council Information Office.
A total of 953 riot suspects have been detained(拘捕), of whom 403 have been formally arrested, according to figures released Wednesday.
About 360 people turned themselves in to the police, 328 of whom have been set free because they committed minor offenses and were willing to cooperate. Only 13 of the 93 suspects listed as the most wanted have been caught.
Qiangba Puncog stressed that the rioters were "an extremely tiny minority" of Tibetans; and the monks who took part in protests were also "an extremely tiny minority" of the Buddhist clergy.
"They do not, and cannot, represent Tibet and the Tibetan people," he added.
Qiangba Puncog promised that the government would do whatever necessary to help those affected by the riots, such as reducing taxes and providing interest-free loans.
He added that the local government offered compensation to families of the 18 innocent civilians who lost their lives; and affected factories and businesses also received government subsidies.
The government quickly restored public facilities such as power supply and telecommunications, he said.
"The lives of people in Lhasa have now returned to normal", he said.
The chairman also expressed confidence in a successful Olympic torch relay in Tibet.
"I have noticed the recent activities of some secessionists(退出者) in London and Paris," he said. "As a Tibetan, I feel ashamed of them."
Qiangba Puncog said he believes that some secessionists will continue to use the torch relay to publicize their illegal cause. "We will fully prepare for it."
