On the afternoon of June 24,1876, Alexander Graham Bell walked through the Centennial Fair Grounds (百年大庆商品交易会) at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia (费城). The bag that he carried seemed heavier than when he left Boston. But he did not trust(信任)sending his telephone model on ahead. He had had a long trip and had taken time for only a cup of tea and a piece of bread in the station. He knew he had to get to the Fair Office before it closed for the day. He had been told that the judges would look at his telephone on Sunday morning, which was the next day. At another time he might have paused (停留) to look at the strange buildings which he passed. Not wanting to frighten the poor man, Mrs Richards quickly hid herself in the small store-room under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall. Suddenly the door of the store-room was opened and a man came in. Now Mrs Richards knew that it must be the man who had come to read the meter (电表). She tried to say something,but it was too late. The man gave a cry and jumped back several steps.When Mrs Richards Walked towards him,he ran away,closing the door behind him.
