It is said that more than four million people die each year from smoking. That number is frightening.

Yet people around the world continue to smoke. In the United States, about forty-seven million adults smoke. This year, more than 430,000 Americans died of diseases which have something to do with smoking. The American Cancer Society(美国癌症协会)says smoking harms the body greatly. It warns that smoking even a number of cigarettes is dangerous.

   It’s not easy to give up smoking. However, doctors say you probably will live longer if you do stop smoking. You will feel better and look better. You also will protect the health of family members who breathe your smoke.

There is not one right way to stop smoking, doctors say. Any way can help. You can take long walks or spend time in places where smoking is not allowed. Also, you can eat a small piece of fruit or vegetable instead of having a cigarette. The sooner you stop smoking, the more you’ll reduce your chances of getting cancer and other diseases.

Kelly Christopher, a student at Lutheran High School in California, US, loves oranges. One day last week, she used a pole(竿子) to pick oranges off trees and collect them in baskets. It's the first time in her 15 years she's picked fruit from trees.

   "This is quite different from buying oranges in the supermarket," said Christopher. "Every time I eat an orange, I'll remember this experience."  

Christopher was one of the 30 student volunteers at Soil Born Farms. She volunteered as part of a project which was set up in 2009 to help homeowners in South Land Park pick oranges and other fruits out of their backyards. Before, the fruit would rot on the ground or get eaten by animals. Now the fruit is donated to those who need it.

    "It is good for many people", said Randy Stannard, who works for the project. "The homeowner gets fruit picked and more people can have healthy food."

    "Two harvests (收成 ) were organized in 2009 and volunteers picked 3,000 pounds (1,360kg) of fruit", Stannard said. In 2010, the number was 20,000. This year, Soil Born Farms hopes to get 40,000 pounds. They will harvest every weekend from January to April.

    Shannon Galloway, Christopher's science teacher, brought her students into the project this year.

 "You're making use of a resource that might be wasted," she said. "I think it's meaningful to everyone."

     Donato Frazier, 15, always climbs up a ladder(梯子) and gets on the top of the tree.

     "Standing on the treetop is pretty cool," Frazier said. "I can see clearly that many baskets are filled up, and even see that many people are eating healthy fruit because of our volunteer work."

On April 20th,2013, a big and powerful earthquake attacked Ya’an, Sichuan Province. A great many buildings and houses collapsed, a lot of people were killed and even more people lost their homes in the earthquake .

The number of the death from the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Ya’an in southwestern China's Sichuan Province has risen to 188, according to latest calculations by local Civil Affairs Bureau(as of 18:00 pm, April 22, ). At least 11,826 were reportedly injured in the quake while 25 are still missing.

Dai Junwu with Harbin-based seismological bureau (地震局)expects the number of the death at less than 1,000, and economic losses from the quake could reach up to 100 billion yuan.

Rescue（营救）efforts were carried “timely and orderly”, said Chinese Premier Li Keqiang who flew to the quicken-stricken area on Sunday, the second day of the quake. He was quoted as saying that “the current priority is to save lives”.
