In 1961 Obama was born in Hawaii, US. His father is an African and his mother is a white American. He grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii.
When Obama was 10 years old, he was one of only three black students at his school in Hawaii. He felt very different from most other students. White girls wanted to touch his hair. A white boy even asked him what his father was.
“I lied to them that my father was a Kenyan prince(王子). But I kept asking myself who I am,” said Obama.
However, 37 years later, the boy made history. Obama became the first black president(总统) in US history.
This unusual background(背景) made him wonder who he was. He once turned to alcohol (酒) to help forget this question.
With the help of his friends, Obama finally turned his life around at college. His hard work made him a star at Harvard. Later, he became only the third black senator (参议员) in US history.
“Obama’s success has made Martin Luther King’s dream come true. That is: A man should not be judged (判断)by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character,” wrote ABC news.

8) Find a part-time job. Try and do the job for at least a month.
9) Find a person to learn from. Choose someone with unusual experience or special talent. Try to learn all you can from him or her.
10) Learn to cook four Chinese dishes. Learning how to cook is not only a practical skill but a way of building a bridge to other people.

After a hard campaign, Barack Obama won the US president election on November 4. He will become the 44th President of the United States---the first African-American in the country’s history.
On the election eve, Obama’s grandmother died---only a few days before seeing her grandson’s victory. Tears ran down the face of Obama as he spoke about his grandmother. “She taught me about hard work.She was the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life. She poured everything she had into me.”
In his first speech as the president, Obama declared to tens of thousands of cheering supporters, “…The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year, or even one term, but America---I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you: We as a people will get there…” The crowd broke out into the same chant(咏唱,吟诵), “Yes, we can!”Those three short words have become the defining phrase of Obama’s campaign.
Forty-five years ago, Martin Luther King had a dream of an America where men and women would be judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. Today the dream has come true.
