A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, Paul?” he asked.

Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? Boy, I wish…”He hesitated.

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.

“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”

“Oh yes, I’d love that.”

After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.

He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.

“There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it …then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas window that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”

Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.

Traveling Can Help Solve the Crime Problems
Americans think that travel is good for you. Some even think it can help to solve one of the country's
worst problems-crime.
Crime worries a lot of people. Every year, the number of crimes goes up and up. They often come from
sad homes, with only one parent at all. There are problems with alcohol (酒精)and drugs (麻醉药).
There are many young criminals in prison. But prison doesn't change them 60 to 70 percent will go back
to crime when they come out of prison.
One man, Bob Burton, thought of a new idea. In the old days, young men had to live a hard life on the
road.  They learnt to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow
into men. So Bob started "Vision Quest".
He takes young criminals on a long, long journey with horses and wagons (四轮马车)3,000 miles through
7 states. They are on the road for more than one year.
The young people on "Vision Quest" all have bad problems. Most of them have already spent time in
prison. This is the last chance.
It's hard work on the road. The day starts before the sun comes up. The boys and girls have to feed the
horses. Some of them have never loved anyone before. But they can love their horses. That love can help them
to a new life.
Not all young people in "Vision Quest" will leave crime behind them. 30 or 40 percent will one day be in the prison again. But that's a lot better than 60 or 70 percent. Bob is right. Travel can be good for you.

A smile will tell people around you that you are a kind and friendly person. However, many people don’t smile because they think they have ugly(丑陋的) teeth. For example, one of my classmates, Mike, doesn’t have very nice teeth, so that is why he seldom opens his mouth. He even says that he has lost confidence(自信) because of his teeth. So it is very important for us to look after our teeth. In fact, a lot of people have this problem. Some people’s teeth are damaged(破坏) because of bad habits, like heavy smoking, eating too much sugar or not brushing teeth often. If your teeth are in bad shape, you should see a dentist(牙医) and ask for help. He can help improve your teeth and tell you how to take care of them.

Smiling can help you to feel more confident and make other people think of you as a more friendly person. If you want to keep healthy, you should not only smile but also laugh. An Indian doctor called Kataria said that children should laugh about 300 times a day, while adults should laugh between 7 and 15 times a day. So please smile and laugh now!
