A man named David went fishing on a holiday．Fishing was his favorite sport，and he had many prizes for fish he had caught．

This summer the weather was beautiful and it was very good for fishing，so he decided to travel around the country，and spent a few days fishing in each of the rivers．

Unluckily, he didn't have much luck，and he caught only a few small fish．He was quite disappointed and was going to go back home when he heard of a large river that was full of fish nearby．   

He found the river quite easily and followed it through the country to a place where it flowed through a farm．He decided to ask the farmer’s permission（许可）to fish in the river．

“You have my permission，”the farmer said；“but you should be careful．For years I stopped my children from going near the river．”

“Is the river dangerous?”David asked．

“It’s not the river，”the farmer said，“it's the fish．They are so big that my children couldn’t hold them．”

David was very excited．All fishermen want to catch really big fish．

“How big are they?”he asked．

“Well．”the farmer told him，“last week I lost one over three feet（英尺）long，and yesterday I lost one just over four feet long．”

“What bad luck．”David said．“I hate losing a big fish once I've caught him．”

“Who’s talking about losing a fish?”the farmer said．“It's two of my children that I lost!”

What is Britain’s favorite sports?

Dear Julie，

My question is- what is Britain’s favorite sport? My dad says it’s football but I think he’s wrong．I think it’s tennis．Who’s right?

It’s not an easy question to answer，Do you mean favorite sport for people to play（participant sport）or for people to watch（spectator sport）? The difference is important．Every year，four million people in Britain go fishing but every week，fifteen million watch football on TV．

I telephoned the Spots Council（委员会）in London and asked them the question：

“It’s difficult to say which spectator sport is Britain’s favorite．There’s football，of course，but the Tennis Championships at Wimbledon（温布尔登网球公开赛）are very popular too，and don’t forget the Olympics，cricket and horse-racing．”

So I can’t really answer the question about spectator sports．But the question about favorite participant sport is easy．The answer is surprising．It isn’t football or tennis or any games with a ball．To give you a clue，it begins with“w”，it’s cheap，there’s no special equipment and everybody in Britain does it．The answer is walking．And the second favorite? Swimming．
