When I looked at the grade on my math paper my jaw (下巴) almost dropped to the ground: a big “65” in bright red ink. I had never received such a terrible grade before.
when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad. I told him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt my words.

A month later. Dad casually (随意地) asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice. I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math final. I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me. I would have preferred a telling off(斥责) than that silence. Finally, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not disappointed at your math score. No one can be perfect all the time. But I am very disappointed in you. If you can’t be honest with your dad. who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to get a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust in you.”
Dad’s words touched my heart. I could not forgive myself for having hurt his feelings. I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed to him and apologized(道歉)sincerely. I realized that my honesty is not only important to me , but to those around me that truly care about me.
In one of Shakespeare’s plays a character says: “No legacy (遗产) is so rich as honesty.” After the crisis between Dad and me, I began to understand those words.

Dear Editor,

I’m a Senior 1 student in a middle school. This term, my favourite teacher, Miss Mao, no longer teaches us.I want to see her, but I’m afraid that she no longer likes me and I don’t want to trouble her.I really miss her. What should I do?

Tian Yan

Dear Tian Yan,

It’s bad luck that you have lost your favourite teacher. But, if she is still in your school, nothing can stop you going to see her. When she isn’t busy, ask her if she minds having a quick chat. You can then tell her she was your favourite teacher?everyone is happy to know they are liked!

If she has left the school, it will be more difficult to meet her.It will be hard, but remember people always come and go in our lives. We can’t rely on them being with us all the time.

You may be sad to say goodbye to her, but we can remember and learn from her.Think of her best qualities.

You could also try looking for similar qualities in your other teachers.Study hard and give your new teacher a chance. In time, you might start to see that he or she has different qualities to learn from.

I remember my maths teacher Mr Young very well. He stood out because the kids made fun of him. He was missing one of his fingers. In school Maths was my worst subject. I don’t think there was ever a day I went to school that I was not afraid.
One day, I was told that if I got one more E on my report card, my parents would be called to school.
I tried really hard for weeks to learn Maths. I just couldn’t understand how to make different parts of numbers into whole things; my brain just couldn’t do it, no matter how hard I tried.
The day before report cards were to come out, I knew that Mr Young would give me an E, just like he always did.
After class ended, I went to Mr Young and told him what would happen if I got another E. He told me there was nothing he could do; it would be unfair to the other kids if he gave me a better grade than I had actually earned.
I looked at the teacher and said, “Mr Young, you know how all the kids make fun of you because you’re missing your finger?”
He looked at me, and said nothing.
“They shouldn’t do that to you because you can’t help not having a finger, Mr Young. Just like I can’t help not being able to learn numbers and matters like that,” I said.
Again, he said nothing as he looked down at his desk, and began grading papers.
The next day, when I got my report card, I looked at my grades: Geography: B- , English: D-  , History: C- , Gym: B+ , Art: C, Maths: D- .
That Math grade was the most favorite one I ever received in my whole life. I knew that someone in the world finally understood what it was like for me to be missing a finger inside my head.
