A The Library of Congress, the largest library in the United States, contains about 18 million books. Harvard University has the largest academic library with more than nine million books. The largest public library is the Chicago Public Library with nearly 6 million volumes, followed by the New York Public Library with 5.5 million. Therefore, finding a book in one of these libraries must be like finding a needle(针) in a haystack! Libraries use a special system to make the job of finding books easier. To keep the books in order, librarians give a number to every book in the library, and books are arranged on the shelves according to these numbers. In order to find the number of a book, you must look in the card catalog. The card catalog is a special file of cards with information about the books in the library. Each book has three cards in the card catalog: a title card, an author card, and a subject card. These cards are arranged in the card catalog in alphabetical order. If you know the title of the book you are looking for, look for the title card. If you only know the author, look for the author card. If you are looking for a book about a particular subject, look for the subject card. When you find the card of the book you want, copy the number of the book. Then you can find the book easily. 1. It seems to be strange to you there is a blind spot(点) on the eyes. Here is an interesting experiment that can make something disappear, when one eye is open.

Make a card about the size of a postcard and write two English letters L and R on it, L on the left and R on the right. First, hold the card about 80 cm away and you see both the letters. Then close your right eye and look at the letter R only with your left eye. And now, as you move the card slowly towards you, you’ll find the letter L disappearing. But if you move the card nearer to your face, the letter will be seen again. Now do the same experiment with your left eye closed, you’ll find the letter R disappearing.

Why does the letter disappear? It is because there is a blind spot on the eye. When the image of the letter falls on the blind spot, it won’t be seen. That is why either of the letters disappears.

The human body is a living machine, and, like all machines, it needs “fuel” to supply it with energy. This is provided by the food we eat. But how much do we need to stay healthy?

The energy value of food is usually measured in calories(卡). A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1℃. For example, you need more calories for standing than for sitting, more for running than for walking, and so on.

The energy in food is in the form of three kinds of chemical materials—carbohydrate(碳水化合物), protein(蛋白质) and fat. Carbohydrate provides 3.8 Cal /gm of the energy, protein 4.0 Cal/gm, and fat 8.8 Cal/gm. Each food contains different amounts of these materials, as the round pictures show.
