What is your favorite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist(乐观者), a leader or an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement.Do you prefer grey and blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead.If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined(有决心的).You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists(心理学家)tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colour preference(爱好), and the effect that colours have on human beings(人类).They tell us that we don't choose our favorite colour as we grow up.If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day.On the other hand, black is depressing(压抑的).Light and bright colours make people not only happier but also more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark grey.

The customs(习惯) in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host(主人), he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have eaten it up. That often discomforts(使……不安) me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to. Because it is bad manners in the West to leave one's food on the plate. I have also found that when a Chinese sits at an American's dinner, he hardly asks for food or drink though he's still hungry or thirsty.

This might be good manners in China but not in the West at all. In the United States, it is not polite to keep asking someone again and again to accept(接受) something. If Americans want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is served with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I'll take some orange juice if you don't mind.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you'd better remember the famous saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

1.The customs in the USA are the same as those in ________.

[ ]

A.England
B.China
C.any other country
D.no other country

D.a host

[ ]

A.he isn't hungry or thirsty

B.he's afraid the host doesn't agree

C.he thinks it is not polite to do that

4.Which of the following is right?

[ ]

A.An American won't accept something until he is asked to again and again.

B.An American eats the food whether he likes it or not at dinner.

C.At dinner a Chinese host often asks his guests to eat more.

D.It is not polite to ask for food at dinner in the USA.

5.“When in Rome, do as the Romans do” means ________.

[ ]

A.When one is in another country, one should keep one's customs.

B.When you live in other countries, you should keep their customs.

C.When you are in Rome, you should love Romans.

D.When one is in Rome, one should do as Americans do.

The size and shape of your ears show your character more than any other part of the face. Other parts of the face change shape as we get older, but ears do not change their shape. They only change in size.

Reading people's character from their ears is a very old science. In ancient times people thought that a person with big ears had a good and generous (慷慨的) character. They thought that a person with pale (苍白的), small ears was dangerous. They also thought that the shape of the ear showed if a person was musical or not. Today, too many people believe that the size and shape of the ear helps you know if a person is musical.

Ears are all different, and each characteristic (特征) has a meaning. Next time you look at a person, see if his or her ears are large, medium-sized or small. Look at the lobes (耳垂) . Are they attached to the face? Ears that are always red mean that a person may have a temper (脾气), or he /she may just have high blood pressure. Ears that are always cold and pale mean that a person has a nervous character. And a big inside the ear means a person is musical.
