It was just getting dark. There was a touch of fog and I was on a lonely stretch of road. 36 I was going along cheerfully, thinking about the dinner I would eat when I got to Salistury .

I was going along 37 at about thirty-five miles an hour when suddenly I heard a scream, a 38 scream--- ^ Help! ̄ I looked round, but the only 39 of life was a large, black, rather suspicious--looking┸敏謬庁car just 40 a bend in the road about a hundred yards away. That was where the cry had come from. I 41 speed and went after it. I think the driver saw what I was doing, for he did the same and began to draw 42 me. As I drew near, the girl¨s voice came again, a lovely voice but trembling with 43 .

^Let me go, you coward; you¨re hurting me. Oh ! Oh ! ̄

I felt my 44 boil. The fog was coming down 45 now, and the countryside was lonelier. I had no 46 that the murderous guy in the car noticed this. Again came a cry.

^Drop that knife, you fool. Oh ! ̄ Then a cry and a groan赴哇.

If I was to save her, it was now or 47 . Perhaps even now I was too late. But if I couldn¨t save the girl, I would at least try to bring the murderer to 48 . The car was only a couple of yards away now. I drove the bike right across its 49 , and its brakes媛概screamed as the driver tried to pull it over and 50 into the ditch┨毅at the side of the road. The door of the car was pushed open angrily and a dark, evil-looking fellow stepped out .

^You fool! ̄ he shouted as he came towards me with his fist raised to hit me. But I was 51 than he. I put all I could into 52 that would have knocked out Joe Louis. It 53 him right on the point of the chin; his 54 slowly bent under him, and he dropped to the ground without a sound. I rushed to the car, 55 open the door and looked inside. There was no girl there. Suddenly from the back of the car came a voice.

Once many years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming. Last week I 36 a telephone call from a woman who could not stop 37 as she told me that one of the stories in my book had saved her son from committing suicide.(徭姫) In closing she called me a 38 .

That 39 me thinking about what a hero really is. Was I a hero 40 I pulled a family from a burning car? If so, how could I be a hero just because I 41 a story that saved someone¨s life?

Today I decided to look up the word ^hero ̄ in the dictionary to see 42 what it meant. It 43 ^a person who does something brave ̄. As I read on, it also said ^ a person who is good and noble ̄.

That statement 44 me more than the part about being 45 . So I thought about something very important. Say I was walking into the local Wal-Mart Store and I 46 to open and hold the door for someone as a courtesy (撰嘆) . As they passed me by, I said, ^How are you today? ̄ Most of the time that would be no big deal, 47 this time let¨s say it was for someone who was deeply 48 and near the end of the rope.

I was in such a condition after my marriage of twenty years ended. I was within hours trying to get up enough 49 to end the pain and misery. When I returned home, someone had 50 me a card in the mail which told me how 51 they would appreciate me as a friend. That wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero.

Similarly many children come out of the orphanages (溝隅垪) 52 a very hard and bitter attitude against the world, but the gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. 53 , most of them will never hurt anyone because of the 54 shown to them by those of us who cared. If it 55 , we will also become ^heroes ̄.
