People with different interests and preferences can enjoy themselves through hip-hop culture. It involves spoken words, break-dancing, painting, fashion, lively design, technology and more. Hip-hop is becoming the unofficial music in the education world, as more artists organize school programs, summer camps, and other activities aimed at engaging (使参与) city youth in the classroom through the beliefs in hip-hop culture. Even more and more university teachers — who were once strongly against hip-hop — have joined the group: in the past two decades, hip-hop culture, including hip-hop education, has become an accepted field in universities and the subject of a lot of books.

One of the biggest sayings in hip-hop is “keep it real”. If a teacher comes to the classroom and says, “I don’t know hip-hop, but I recognize that it’s your culture and I want to learn,” the kids will teach the teacher, and then the students will be more willing to learn from that educator.

Peer (同龄人) teaching has long been recognized as a powerful way for students to learn and gain confidence in their own abilities. It’s also a useful way of approaching technology in the classroom, where students who love digital technology might know more than their teachers. Guilford County Schools’ oldest volunteer, 97-year-old Thurman Haynes, has been chosen as the national winner in the Salute to Senior Service Competition, sponsored (赞助) by Home Instead.

Haynes, a daily volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown, was selected from thousands of nominees (被提名者). “Thurman Haynes reminds us all how important it is to celebrate life on a daily basis,” said Kevin Carr in his nomination. “His love he gives others is amazing.”

Haynes has been involved with the school from the start. He sold the school system the land on which Haynes-Inman was built. He can see the school from his home. The school, which opened in August, 2010, educates special-needs students between the ages of 3 and 22. And Haynes knows something about that, too.

His only grandchild, Meredith, had mental and physical disabilities. She died in 1993 shortly before her 21st birthday. The school is named in part for her, the Meredith Leigh Haynes-Bennie Lee Inman Education Center. In her honor, he volunteers more than 80 hours per month at the school.

He is often one of the first to arrive and greet students each school day. He assists them off the bus and ensures they arrive at class safely. Haynes also lends a hand during PE classes, helping students participate in volleyball, jump rope and other activities.

The students and staff at Haynes-Inman held a parade in January in honor of Haynes’ 97th birthday. “Haynes proves age is not important when it comes to making a positive difference to the lives of others,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead. Haynes is among the 62 percent of seniors 68 and older who take part in voluntary work, according to a recent Marist Poll sponsored by Home Instead.

This story happened during World War Ⅱ. It was a fierce battle. Many soldiers had lost their lives. Horror gripped (紧抓) Jim’s heart because he saw that his lifelong friend was left behind in a trench (战壕). Continuous gunfire whizzed over his head. Jim asked the lieutenant (中尉) if he might go out into the “no-man’s-land” between the trenches to bring his fallen friend back.

“You can go,” said the lieutenant, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” Jim looked up. Continuous gunfire was still whizzing over his head, but he had made up his mind. He went out of the trench and moved towards his fallen friend slowly. Amazingly, he managed to reach his friend, put him onto his shoulders and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two got to the bottom of the trench, the lieutenant checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at Jim.

“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you got shot. You may die, too.” “It was worth it, though, Sir,” said Jim. The lieutenant was confused and asked, “What do you mean? Your friend is dead.” “Yes, Sir,” Jim answered, “but it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him saying, ‘Jim…, I knew you’d come.’”
