Dear Su Hai,

I have a problem and I don't know how to deal with it. I have two elder sisters.

They're both clever and always do everything well. I feel I can never be as good as them.

I am worried about the following problems these days. Can you give me some help?

¡ôShould I just be myself or make a change?

¡ôHow can I let my parents feel proud of me?

¡ôCan you share one of your experiences with me?

Best wishes,

David

Photographer Zhang Zhongzeng has taken a series of photos showing people's lives around 40 years ago in Beijing. Born in 1957, Zhang has witnessed (Ä¿¶Ã) China's changes since the reform and opening-up period began in 1978.

Playing with birds

Date: 1983

Location: Deshengmen

During the 1980s, there were many elderly men who loved playing with birds. In the early morning, you could always see them holding bird cages, walking in the park or hutongs, on the road or under a tree. The hobby of playing with birds became popular during the Tang Dynasty and reached its heyday during the Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty.

Now there are fewer Beijingers with birds, as elderly citizens' lives get richer and hutongs disappear from the city.

Carriages (Âí³µ) in the city

Date: 1989

Location: Hepingli

In the 1980s, the trolley bus (ÎÞ¹ìµç³µ) and bus ran across empty roads, while carriages carrying goods or vegetables kept pace. During that time, traffic in Beijing was quite smooth, and three¡ªwheeled motor vehicles, walking tractors and auto trucks could make use of the streets. The most commonly seen transportation was the bicycles, with different brands (Æ·ÅÆ), styles and functions.

Sugar¡ªcoated haws on a stick

Date: 1988

Location: Qian men Watchtower

Among well-known Beijing snacks, bingtanghulu (sugar - coated haws on a stick) is probably the most famous, a city trademark.

For children living in the 1980s in Beijing, when there were no Me Donald's or KFC's. bingtanghulu was their favorite snack. Now, for them a bite of bingtanghulu brings reminiscence and nostalgia (»³¾É).

1.Why do fewer and fewer elderly citizens in Beijing play with birds?

A.Because there are fewer birds

B.Because they have richer lives.

C.Because they hate birds.

D.Because they are very busy.

2.What was the most popular transportation in 1989?

A.Motor vehicles. B.Walking tractors. C.Autotrucks. D.Bicycles.

3.What does the underlined word "reminiscence" mean in English?

A.Luck. B.Memories. C.Interest. D.Treasure.

The aims of the students who come to school is to study. But to study requires a right way, or you waste either time or the money. The following are the ways of studying.

The best time for reading is morning. Because in the morning, the air is fresh and our minds are clear. For that reason, we can get good results.

In studying we must be patient. If we don't understand a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next one till we have learned the first one well.

When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book. We can not read absent-mindedly ( ÐIJ»ÔÚÑÉµØ ) , or we can get nothing from the book while we are reading.

We must always ask ¡°whys¡±. If it is not well understood, write it down and ask our teachers or parents, brothers or friends, in any possible way. We must know it completely and then our knowledge can be used well.

Though there are many ways for studying, however, the above mentioned will be quite enough if we can keep them in heart and do so.

It's hard for middle school students to prepare a program in three weeks. So, I was really nervous. What made matters worse, there were only nine students taking part in. After a discussion among group members, we decided to perform a song and a dance. The song we chose was showed in the Chinese style and I was the lead singer.

Over the next three weeks, we used every minute we could find to rehearse (²ÊÅÅ). The dancers practised during breaks, and I practised through my phone. I used it to compare my performance with the original, which allowed me to correct my mistakes. (it, best, though, tried, everybody, difficult, was, their).

Finally, the day of the performance came. After making up and dressing up, we became nervous. Before going to stage, I told everyone, "No matter how we perform, we are sure to be the best, since the audience has paid a lot to see us."

As we left the stage, many people spoke to us, praising our performance. A foreign student even came over to us, as he was curious about our ancient-style costumes. He took a photo with us, which became the best record of our hard work.

It was hard work that made us a success. Finally, we stood out among the twenty groups to win the prize.
