Groundhog Day is held on Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney,Pennsylvania,a state in the northeastern U. S. every year. And you might be wondering how a groundhog landed the job of predicting the weather. The tradition goes like this: If a groundhog sees his shadow this morning, there will be six more weeks of winter.

If he doesn’t see his shadow, spring is on the way, that is to say,we luck out with an early spring.

Since a groundhog hibernates for the winter, its coming out of the ground is a natural sign of spring. Centuries ago, people in Europe watched for a badger or bear as signs of winter's end, rather than a groundhog. Germans who moved to Pennsylvania in the mid-1800s began keeping an eye on the groundhog. The large population of the little animal made it easy for them to forecast the weather.

It also has religious origins, just like Candlemas, which is also on Feb. 2.Candlemas Day is a Christian holiday. Early Christians believed that if the sun came out on Candlemas Day,winter would last for six more weeks.

In the 1880s, some friends in Punxsutawney,Pennsylvania, went into the woods on Candlemas Day to look for groundhogs. This outing became a tradition, and a local newspaper editor nicknamed the seekers “the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club”. Starting in 1887 the search became an official event and centered on a groundhog called “Punxsutawney Phil”. A ceremony still takes place every year. Groundhog Day is not a legal holiday;nobody gets off work. Many American cities have their own special groundhogs;New York City's official groundhog is called “Pothole Pete”,but “Punxsutawney Phil” gets the most attention. So far,Phil has seen his shadow about 85 % of the time.
