    Why am I bringing a 10-pound (4.5kg) pumpkin upstairs? Why am I washing it? Why am I cutting it with a big ? Why am I carving (雕刻) a Jack O’Lantern?

    October 31 is . During this holiday kids on people’s doors asking for sweets. There are orange and black things in the houses. Jack O’Lanterns are one of these things! People carve them out of empty .

    A lot of houses don’t carve Jack O’Lanterns. They just have fake (假的) . It’s to buy a fake one, and a fake Jack O’Lantern doesn’t go .

    Not me! I am going to make the thing. I am going to carve a face on a pumpkin!

    The first thing for me to do is to the pumpkin. It has lots of dirt on it. Then I have to cut open the top and take out the inside.

    This is not easy. It takes two hours to out the inside with a big knife. I the seeds, as they can be eaten. I cut three triangles (三角形) in the side. Two triangles will be the eyes, and is a nose. At the I cut out a mouth. I am so of my work. I take it outside.

    Three days later, the inside goes gray. A few days after that, the thing is black. The pumpkin is going bad! By Halloween, the Jack O’Lantern will be ! I should have got a fake one.

    Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventures ----those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans.     Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.(生存).

They live and work in comparatively safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.
