I have tried many ways to be ill. I don’t wear a sweater when I should, and two days ago I walked in the rain without my shoes. But so far nothing has happened. Debbie once told me about a boy in her class who liked being away from school. He would rub (擦) the end of the thermometer (温度计) until it went up to 39℃. Then he’d put it in his mouth and his mother would think he was really ill.

This morning I tried doing that but it never went above 35℃ and I rubbed it for ten minutes. So I held the thermometer next to the light on my desk and it went up to 40℃. I thought I’d put it in my mouth and walk downstairs like that. Then my mother would take it out and she would be worried when she saw that I was rather ill.

The only trouble was I didn’t know the thermometer would be so hot. As soon as I put it into my mouth, it burnt my tongue! I spit the thermometer out. It fell on the floor but it didn’t break.

I will have to think of a better way to get my mother and father back together.

I hid (藏)the long black bag in the garage (车库) two days ago. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.

It was very difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was true. But the reason for leaving was that I wanted to complete my plan.

First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. My son wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 pm was not early. As usual, I read them a bed time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would learn my secret.(秘密)

The great time finally came, and feeling like a thief (小偷) in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I took the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbours might see me and call the police.

It was already eleven o’clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer (锤子).

After much hard work, I finally finished my work. I looked down at my watch. It was 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn’t be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas brought them this year.

I’ll never forget that summer day in 1965 when my mother suddenly died of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer stopped by to ask my father if the hospital could use Mother’s corneas(角膜). I was shocked. “The doctors want to dissect Mum and give her away to other people!” I thought as I ran into the house in tears.

“How can you let them do that to her?” I screamed at my father. “My mum came into this world in one piece and that is how she should go out.”

“Linda,” Father said quietly, putting his arm around me, “the greatest gift you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago that if we can make a difference in just one person’s life after we die, our death will have meaning.” He went on to explain they had both decided to donate their organs(器官).

The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.

Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1980, my father became seriously ill and moved in with us. He cheerfully told me that when he died, he wanted me to donate his eyes. “Sight is one of the greatest gifts a person can give,” he said.

I told Wendy what her grandpa had said, and with tears in her eyes, she went into her grandpa’s room and gave him a big hug. She was only fourteen years old------the same age at which I was introduced to such a thing. What a difference!

My father died on April 11,1986, and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, Wendy said, “Mum, I’m so proud of you for what did for Grandpa.”

At that moment, I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes.

1.How was it for the writer to agree the hospital’s use of her mother’s corneas?

A. Easy B. Possible C. Simple D. Difficult

2.According to the passage, the underlined word “dissect” may be best replaced by___________.

A. cut up B. search for C. move away D. burn away

3.Why did the writer finally agree on her mother’s donation?

A. Because she was afraid of her father

B. Because she didn’t care about it any more

C. Because she was too young to stop it.

D. Because her father explained to her

4.What did Wendy think of her grandpa’s donation?

A. At first she couldn’t accept it, but she agreed in the end.

B. She begged her mother not to donate her grandpa’s eyes.

C. She felt proud of her grandpa’s donation

D. She thought it normal and didn’t car about it much.
