About ten men in every hundred have the trouble of color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected(被影响) in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman.

There are different kinds of color blindness. For example, a man cannot see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person can’t tell the difference between blue and green. Only a few unlucky men may see everything in shades of green—a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a difficult thing to explain. In only one eye there are millions of very small things called “cones(锥状细胞)”. These help us to see in the bright light and to tell differences between colors. There are also millions of “rods(杆状细胞)”, but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shapes but not colors.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes(蚊子) like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue light will. Human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes, we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night.

  1. Some people say it’s safer to be driven by women because ______.

  A. women drive more carefully

  B. women are better at driving than men

  C. women can see things more clearly

  D. there are fewer color-blind women

  2. We can attract mosquitoes by using a ______ light.

  A. red B. yellow C. blue D. green

Kenya, a country in East Africa, is known for its amazing wildlife, especially lions. However, over the last decade (十年) the number of lions has decreased from 10,000 to over 2,000. Most of them were killed by the local people because they had to do so to protect their cows.

As well as the cows, wild animals should be protected. Now because of a creative idea thought of by a young boy, this problem can be solved peacefully.

At the age of 11, Richard Turere was put in charge of the family’s cows. The local people think this job is an honor since cows are considered the family fortune.

The only problem was that their land was next to Nairobi National Park, home to the largest number of lions in the world. As a result, the cows were often eaten by the hungry lions.

Richard noticed that when he walked around the cows with a flashlight, the lions kept away because they were afraid of humans and the flashlight. So he decided to create an automated (自动的) flashlight. Richard tied some bulbs (灯泡) from broken flashlights around the cow stockade (栅栏). Under an automated lighting system, the bulbs flashed one by one, just like someone walking around with a flashlight that could keep lions away. xK b1. Co m

Since Richard’s invention was put to use, none of Richard’s cows has lost. As it only costs $10 to make this simple device, it can be widely used in Kenya in the future.
