Stay Home Studying

17-year-old Liu Yu was a high school student in China. She planned to go back to school on February 17 to prepare for the 2020 college entrance examination. However, the Ministry of Education told people in late January that the spring term for all schools would be put off because of the serious disease in China. So Liu Yu, like all the other students, had to stay at home.

However, Liu and her classmates didn't fall behind their plans and began studying full-time again-only from home. It may have become the largest online teaching experiment the country has ever seen.

To go with students' new learning environment, a "cloud platform(云平台)" was started using on February 17. It provided students with education resources covering all school subjects. But some students had difficulty going to the website or using smart phones. A TV channel by China Education Television started airing classes on February 17. So students could have classes and study online or on TV at home.

But the online platform and TV channel don't just offer school knowledge. Students can also learn how to protect themselves from the disease and psychological health during this period, according to the Ministry of Education.

For some students, the chance to study from home has had some unexpected benefits. Yuan Siyi, who lives in Hubei province, used to get up before 6 am on school days, but since starting online courses, she got more hours of sleep every morning. "I like online teaching because I have more freedom at home, "Yuan told TEENS. She began her all-day courses on February 3.

However, online teaching and learning has its weaknesses compared to studying in a traditional classroom. "My motivation(动力)to study is stronger when my classmates are around me and all working very hard," Yuan said.

According to the Ministry of Education, online courses are just a short-time way of learning during the disease. When the new term begins, schools will return to classroom teaching.

A new rubbish sorting system (垃圾分类系统) has been put into use in Fangchengyuan Community in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes (二维码) on it.

"When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money," one of the local people told reporters. "It's really creative and encouraging."

This smart system has been carried out in 350 communities in Beijing. The capital of China has joined a list of cities in the country that take action to support rubbish sorting. For example, Shenzhen and Shanghai have made laws to punish people and organizations for not sorting rubbish correctly.

China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills (填埋场) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.

What's more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits (经济利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused to make about 850 kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have developed successful sorting systems.

Japan has a strict and detailed system. When people throw away a water bottle, the cap, the wrapper (包装纸) and the bottle itself have to go into three different bins. Every year, families receive special rubbish sorting timetables and directions from their local governments. They are advised to follow the timetables and directions when they throw away rubbish.

In Australia, every family is provided with three rubbish bins -the red lid (盖子) bin for "general waste" like food and plastic bags, the yellow lid bin for "recycling" like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for "green waste" such as grass and leaves. On the streets, the bins are printed with pictures of the things that are allowed inside. It makes recycling quite easy.

A.Polluting soil. B.Polluting water.

C.Taking up a lot of land. D.Saving resources.

2.Which paragraph discuss the economic benefits of rubbish sorting?

A.Paragraph 3. B.Paragraph 4.

C.Paragraph 5. D.Paragraph 6.

3.In Australia, which bin should you put food left after dinner in?

A.The red lid bin. B.The yellow lid bin.

C.The green lid bin. D.The black lid bin.

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A.In Australia, the green lid bin is used for all kinds of recyclable (可回收的) waste.

B.In Japan, all kinds of things for recycling are printed on rubbish bins.

C.Japanese people cannot throw a bottle into a bin unless they move away the wrapper first.

D.Australian people have to obey local timetables and directions to throw away rubbish strictly.

Would you pay thousands of dollars for a painting with a face so unclear that you're not even sure it's a face? What if the artist was a computer?

A piece of artwork created mainly by a computer programme has been sold a the price $432,500—about ten times more than people expected. This painting named Edmond de Belamy, was created by artificial intelligence (AI). This means the computer now doesn't just follow us, but makes some decisions and "thinks itself".

15,000 real paintings were used by some French students to train the computer programme with two parts.

One part tries to create paintings that look real, while the other part decides if it is good. If the painting doesn't look real enough, the first part will change its decisions until it comes up with a better work.

This is not the first AI artwork just the first piece on sale. In fact, many people are not impressed with the painting. "The work isn't interesting or creative," says Robbie Barrat, who helped create the painting but doesn't like the idea of selling it. He thinks it's too simple and gives a bad idea of what real AI artists are doing.

In some other people's opinion, however, AI art is already very unusual. They hope it will be more common in the future.

Still, people who look down upon AI art shouldn't worry. Just as an AI artist, Theo Triantafyllidis says, he usually thinks of AI as a tool and not the artist. Even the best AI today is somewhere between a stupid child and a smart pet. It will grow up.

C.several unknown artists D.a man called Edmond

2.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

B.Whom the computer programme was trained by.

C.Why the painting Edmond de Belamy was created.

A.many people are impressed with the painting

B.lots of people took part in creating the painting

C.some people didn't expect the painting to be sold

D.most people thanked Robbie Barrat for his help with the painting

4.What does the writer probably think of AI?

A.It creates better art than humans.

B.It hasn't developed well enough

C.It will make many artists lose their jobs.

D.It will always be a tool used only by human artists.
