Tom was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. He had already been in his backyard for about an hour. He could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook (摇) his head as he thought, "This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea,I don't have any money to spend."

Since his father passed away three years ago,the family of five had fallen into trouble but tried best. His mother worked nights at the hospital, but the small payment (报酬) never seem to be enough. Tom had three sisters. They also took good care of him when his mother was not at home. All his sisters had already made beautiful gifts for their mother. With tears in his eyes,Tom kicked the snow and started to walk down to the street. It wasn't easy being six without a father. Tom walked from shop to shop. Suddenly,he found a dime (—角硬币) on the ground. He felt so excited. He hurried into the shop but the salesperson told him he could not buy anything with only a dime. He saw a flower shop and went in. When the shop owner asked if he could help him,Tom showed his dime and asked if he could buy one flower as his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Tom and his ten cents. Then he said to him, "Just wait here."

Tom waited until the sound of the door closing pulled Tom back to reality (现实) . Suddenly the shop owner came to the counter. There, lay twelve lilies (百合花) tied together. "That will be ten cents, young man , ”the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly,Tom gave the man his dime. Could this be true? The shop owner added, "I happened to have some lilies on sale for ten cents a dozen. Would you like them?"

This time Tom did not hesitate (犹豫) ,and when the man placed the long box into his hands,he knew it was true. Walking out of the door,he heard the shop owner say, "Merry Christmas, son."

c Pollution means adding dirty or harmful (有害的) things to land, air, water and so on. As a result, they are no longer pleasant or safe to use. Pollution is bad for animals and plants, and it even makes people's health in danger. In our daily life,we can see different kinds of pollution in many places. There are three main forms of pollution;land pollution, air pollution and water pollution.

Land pollution is caused by solid waste, such as cans, bottles and some plastic things which aren't broken down quickly. It makes the environment look very bad. However, air pollution is more serious than land pollution. It is much worse in cities and towns because of the fumes (废气) from traffic and the waste from human (人类) activities. When people drive their cars ,fumes which are most made up of C02,N02 and S02 are given off. After the gases get into the air, they may mix with clouds. Various kinds of pollution will cause many health problems. People have realized they must change this serious situation. There are many ways to control pollution. To develop alternative energy (替代能源) is very popular in many countries. China, for example, has made up its mind to be a leader in this field. It is trying hard to make full use of energy from the sun and wind. It has paid plenty of money to make electric cars and trains instead of traditional traffic.   In high school, the last year may be the most difficult but also the most important. Students are encouraged to work even harder and consider the universities they want to go to. In fact, working hard in that year has a great influence on which universities they will enter after they graduate from high school.

In the first term of my last year in high school,I did a good job on my study. I got up early every day and never left my homework until the last minute, and had a great amount of confidence to finish my high school with good grades. In my notebook I wrote down the grades I aimed to get;I often looked at them to encourage myself. I took part in tests online every day and went to the teachers for help regularly. I also had my elder sister help me with my English. My grades were getting better and better and I really finished the first term with great grades.

However,I did not keep my outstanding performance in the second term before my graduation. I tried playing a game on the Internet when I was bored one day. Gradually,I spent more and more time playing online games, because I was addicted to them. Therefore,I went to bed late, copied my classmates' homework often and could hardly learn anything. My final grades were surely not as great as I expected.

When I did graduate,I decided not to go to the graduation ceremony (毕业典礼) ,not for the grades I finally achieved, but for the idea that I wouldn't be comfortable if I were asked to receive my diploma        (文凭) in front of my classmates, teachers, parents and guests. At last,I stayed at home and played computer games instead of going to the ceremony.

After 21 years of marriage,my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and see a movie. She said, "I love you,but I know this other woman loves you too,and she would love to spend some time with you."

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow (寡妇) for 19 years. But my busy work and my three children had made it impossible to visit her often.

That night I called to invite my mother and took her out for dinner.
