Volunteers are probably some of the most overlooked(被忽视的) people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hardworking volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.

My job was to give a high-five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. To make things worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly catch their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High-five!”

At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself be full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”

That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.

It was a room full of boys. A girl, about 10 years old, was sitting in the center. She was the only girl among the boys. As a tradition in her village, other girls had to stay home.

The girl, Shameem Akhtar, was born in a small village in Pakistan (巴勒斯坦). In her village, all parents keep girls inside their homes. Luckily, Shameem’s uncle, a university graduate, wanted to give her a chance to see the world. He offered Shameem a chance to attend school. However, Shameem had to fight to complete her schooling. To be allowed to enter college, she stopped eating for 3 days, which is called a hunger strike (抗议).

After graduating from college, Shameem got a position in a non -profit (非营利性的) organization aiming to help women in rural (农村的)areas. There, she saw a Pakistan that she didn’t know. To get water, they would walk three hours every day to get to the wells (水井). Shameem found that the position was more than just a job for her. She discovered her power. By setting an example, her experience could encourage more people to understand the importance of education and send their daughters to school.

Now, Shameem teaches in a rural school in her hometown. “The first day I walked into the school” she said, “I saw all these little Shameem looking at me with dreams in their eyes, the same dream of freedom which I had in my childhood.”

Today, there is not a single girl in her village who doesn’t go to school.
